Agra East is an especially important region not only in Agra but also in entire Uttar Pradesh and happens to be one of the five Agra Lok Sabha Constituencies as well as one of the 403 constituencies in Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Agra district. Agra is one of the oldest cities in India and its mention could be found in as early as the Mahaharata, when it was known as the Agravena. It rose into prominence under the Mughal rule, especially under the rule of Emperor Akbar. He transferred his capital to Agra by building the city of Fatehpur Sikri and right from the time of this grandfather, the beautification of the city had started with the building of many Persian style gardens along the banks of the river Yamuna, Aram Bagh in particular. Later, Shah Jahan put the city on the world map since he built the Taj Mahal and many of these historical monuments have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. The city has a number of railway stations to cater to the vast numbers of tourists coming here each year and many infrastructural projects have been taken up as well.
