Assam Chief Minister Provides Updates on Infrastructure Projects in the State
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently announced significant updates on various road infrastructure projects in the state. After a meeting with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Sarma provided updates on projects such as the Gohpur-Numaligarh tunnel and the four-laning of several highways. These developments are expected to greatly improve transportation in Assam and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
Gohpur-Numaligarh Tunnel Project Nearing Completion
One of the key projects that Sarma highlighted is the Gohpur-Numaligarh tunnel project. This project aims to construct Assam’s first underwater tunnel between Numaligarh and Gohpur at a cost of Rs 60 billion. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the tunnel is nearing completion, marking an important milestone in its progress. Once the DPR is finalized, the project will move to the next phase.
Transforming Assam’s Transportation Network
Sarma expressed his vision for enhancing Assam’s transportation network. He shared his thoughts on the possibility of a tunnel under the river Brahmaputra, similar to the Atal tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir, enabling the movement of railways and vehicles. His dream became a reality when discussions took place and the decision was made to construct the Gohpur-Numaligarh tunnel, which will bring the two banks of the Brahmaputra closer. This project is expected to further connect regions within Assam, promoting economic development and facilitating easier transportation of goods and services.
Nitn Gadkari’s Call for Completion of Ongoing Projects
During the meeting, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of completing ongoing projects in Assam. He urged officials to expedite the work on the 28 ongoing projects that are running on schedule and to address any delays in the completion of the 11 projects currently underway under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). This push for timely project completion highlights the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure in the state.
Priority Projects in Assam
Chief Minister Sarma personally appealed to Gadkari to prioritize certain key projects in Assam. These projects include:
1. Four-Laning of Jorhat to Jhanji and Jhanji to Demow Stretch on NH 37: Gadkari directed officials to expedite the completion of the four-laning work on these stretches and ensure proper road signage placement to prevent accidents.
2. Four-Laning of Demow to Moran Bypass on NH 37: The remaining work on this stretch was brought to the Minister’s attention for review and completion.
3. Widening of Four-Lane with Paved Shoulder of Kawaram Taro Village-Dilai Section on NH 29: Sarma requested completion of the widening project on this crucial segment.
4. Four-Laning of NH 37 from Moran Bypass to Bogibeel: The Chief Minister highlighted the necessity of completing the much-awaited four-laning of this section.
5. Development and Upgradation of Jamugurihat to Biswanath Chariali Bypass on NH 52: Gadkari instructed officials to personally inspect the ongoing work of this project.
The completion of these projects will significantly enhance the road infrastructure in Assam, ensuring smoother travel for commuters and boost economic activities in the region.
Focus on Ring Road and Majuli Bridge
Furthermore, Sarma requested Gadkari to expedite the process for awarding the contract for the 121-kilometer Guwahati Ring Road project. This project, estimated to cost Rs. 5,729 crore, is crucial for reducing congestion and ensuring better connectivity in Guwahati.
The Chief Minister also sought Gadkari’s support for the re-tendering of the Majuli bridge over the Brahmaputra River. This initiative is essential for improving connectivity to Majuli, the world’s largest river island, and providing safe and efficient transportation options for its residents.
Conclusion
The updates provided by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the various infrastructure projects in the state indicate a strong push towards improved transportation networks. The nearing completion of the Gohpur-Numaligarh tunnel project and the focus on ongoing and priority road projects will contribute to Assam’s overall development and growth. These initiatives not only enhance connectivity but also open up new avenues of growth for industries, boost tourism, and improve the quality of life for residents of Assam.
