Reasons for Delhi Government to Ban Firecrackers
The winter in Delhi experiences a thick shadow of smoke looming over the city. This is partly because of Delhi’s location, which acts as a conduit between the Ganga-Yamuna interfluve and the Punjab plains. The west winds during winters sway in smoke from the Punjab and Haryana farm fires. Delhi’s location is such that it traps all the smoke leading to air pollution in the city and disturbing the air quality index (AQI) to a dangerous level.
However, farm fires contribute only 40% to air pollution, while firecrackers and automobiles are the major contributors to air pollution. Every year the government works towards the Delhi firecracker ban, but the initiative runs late, leading to the sale of firecrackers in the grey market.

Say Yes to Green Diwali
Due to the decision to firecrackers banned in Delhi, businesses and traders associated with production and manufacturing incur severe losses. The government has allowed producing green firecrackers or eco-friendly crackers made from alternative raw materials that have less of an impact on the environment. Also, they are safer for human and animal health. It has been stated that green crackers are environmentally friendly because they don’t comprise aluminium, barium, potassium nitrate, or carbon.
The traders and businesses have asked the government for an exemption on green crackers as they have incurred a severe loss on their previous stock. High authorities have yet to give a verdict on the same.
Last year, to create awareness against the burning of firecrackers, the Delhi government launched the ‘Patakhe Nahi Diye Jalao’ campaign. This is implied for Diwali 2022 as well.
