Keeping Up with Demand: Banks Introduce Daily Limits on UPI Transactions

Rising-UPI-Usage-Prompts-Banks-to-Enforce-Daily-Transaction-Limit

In India, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed the process of financial transactions. This innovative payment system operates in real-time, empowering individuals to effortlessly send and receive money using their smartphones.

Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has gathered widespread praise for its user-friendly nature, robust security measures, and remarkable convenience. With UPI, users can effortlessly make payments, transfer funds, settle bills, and even engage in online shopping, eliminating the dependance on conventional cash transactions.

As per the latest reports, banks have taken a decision to impose additional daily limits on transactions made through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The extraordinary rise in the number of such transactions led to this decision. These new limits come on top of the restrictions that were already established by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2021. The main objective behind implementing these limits is to maintain the efficient operation of the payments interface as its popularity continues to grow.

As of now, users are allowed to carry out up to 20 transactions or transfer a maximum of ₹1 lakh in a single day, whether all at once or gradually throughout the day. However, certain specific types of transactions, including those related to capital markets, collections (such as bill payments), insurance, and forward inward remittances, have a higher limit of ₹2 lakh.

In December 2021, the limit for UPI-based ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount) IPO and retail direct schemes was raised to ₹5 lakh per transaction. The NPCI states that the maximum daily limit for UPI transactions is ₹1 lakh, but bill payments and merchants are allowed a higher limit of ₹5 lakh.

Each bank has its own maximum limit for UPI transactions, ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹1 lakh. Some banks have even opted for weekly or monthly limits instead of daily ones. For instance, IDFC Bank has set a weekly limit of ₹1 lakh and a monthly limit of ₹30 lakh for UPI transactions.

There is a growing trend among banks and payment applications to establish their own transaction criteria. For example, state-run banks like Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Bank of Baroda have set a lower transaction limit of ₹25,000. At PNB, the daily limit stands at ₹50,000. As for applications, users of Google Pay, for instance, will exceed the daily limit if they attempt to make more than 10 money transfers in a single day across all UPI apps.

These new limitations demonstrate the proactive measures taken by banks and payment platforms to handle the increasing volume of UPI transactions while ensuring a smooth and secure payment experience for users.
