Bengaluru’s Phase 3 metro projects deadline set at 2029

Bengaluru’s expanding metro network is set to witness significant milestones with the announcement of Phase 3 projects, expected to be completed by December 2029. Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot shared this update during his Republic Day address at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground. The ambitious metro initiative includes two major corridors: Corridor-1, stretching 32.15 km from Kempapura to JP Nagar 4th Phase, and Corridor-2, a 12.50 km stretch from Hosahalli to Kadabagere. Both corridors are projected to be completed at a combined cost of ₹15,611 crore, enhancing the city’s transport infrastructure. This announcement also follows the progress of Phase 2A and 2B, with a total investment of ₹147 billion for a 58.19 km stretch connecting several key locations, including Kempegowda International Airport. The governor also referenced the Bangalore Development Authority’s (BDA) plans to provide 30,000 housing units across 34 locations, with 10,615 flats already completed as part of ongoing projects. Additionally, the Karnataka government is working on revising mining regulations to simplify the granting of mining leases, particularly for SC/ST individuals and organizations. These developments signal a strong commitment from the state government to improve urban planning and infrastructure, solidifying Bengaluru’s position as a growing global tech hub.

Progress and Investment in Bengaluru Metro

The Bengaluru Metro Phase 3 project is a vital extension of the city’s already extensive metro network. Governor Gehlot’s detailed insights into the project reveal a strategic approach to urban transport. Phase 2A spans 19.75 km from Central Silk Board to Krishnarajapura, while Phase 2B connects Krishnarajapura to Kempegowda International Airport over 38.44 km. Furthermore, the governor mentioned the Karnataka government’s efforts to streamline the mining lease process for SC/ST individuals, aligning with ongoing social equity initiatives. The revised Karnataka Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 1994, aim to ease access to mining leases, promoting economic opportunities for marginalized communities. Moreover, public safety is being prioritized with the installation of Vehicle Location Tracking Devices and Emergency Panic Buttons in public service vehicles, enhancing safety measures under the Nirbhaya Fund initiative. With 40,848 vehicles already equipped, the state plans to extend these installations. The traffic management sector is also evolving, with the adoption of AI-based platforms to monitor and control traffic in real-time, further demonstrating the government’s proactive approach to urban challenges.

Addressing Cybercrime and Community Engagement

As Bengaluru continues to grow, concerns over cybercrime have also increased, now accounting for 10% of all reported crimes in the state. Governor Gehlot emphasized the need for advanced technology and public awareness to combat this rising threat. The government is focusing on providing training for law enforcement agencies and raising awareness among citizens to prevent cyber threats. In addition to cybersecurity, community engagement is being fostered through initiatives like appointing 2,519 students as Police Marshals, aiming to involve younger generations in safety and awareness programs. The Bengaluru Traffic Police’s adoption of the ASTRAM platform to manage traffic sustainably further illustrates the city’s commitment to integrating technology in public safety and urban management. With these multifaceted initiatives, the Karnataka government is not only addressing immediate infrastructure needs but also laying the groundwork for a safer and more connected Bengaluru in the years to come.
