The city of Chandigarh has an elaborate history. The gently slanting plains where Chandigarh now stands were once a large lake surrounded by marsh. The fossilised remains discovered there suggest that the environment supported a wide variety of aquatic and amphibian life. The Harappans lived in the region around 8000 years ago, according to historical records.
The region was a part of the big and thriving Punjab Province from the mediaeval era until 1947, when the country was partitioned into East and West Punjab. The city was intended to house thousands of refugees who had been evicted from West Punjab in addition to serving as the capital of East Punjab.
The area at the foot of the Shivaliks was chosen as the location for the new capital in March 1948 after consultation with the Indian government. According to the 1892–1893 District Ambala gazetteer, the city site’s location was a part of the formerly Ambala district. In 1952, the city’s cornerstone was laid. Later, when the state was divided into Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh on November 1, 1966, the city gained the distinction of serving as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana while also being declared a Union Territory and being directly under the jurisdiction of the Central Government.

Chandigarh Smart City Objectives
Chandigarh was chosen as a smart city in May 2016 during the Fast Track Round when the Smart Cities Challenge. For the purpose of planning and carrying out projects supported by the India Smart Cities Mission, Chandigarh Smart City Limited was established as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in June 2016.
The Chandigarh Smart City has taken on projects involving essential infrastructural services like water systems, water supply and sewage, sanitary facilities, and urban transportation. Along with these, initiatives related to social infrastructural facilities have also received attention in an effort to raise the standard of living for Chandigarh residents. Urban retrofit, as well as rejuvenation initiatives, will also be carried out in order to turn Chandigarh into a thriving regional hub.
