Chennai Metro Rail Completes Piling Work for 8-Kilometer Stretch
In a remarkable achievement, the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has successfully completed the piling work for an 8-kilometer stretch between Kodambakkam Powerhouse and Porur Junction Metro stations. This stretch is part of Corridor 4, which spans a total of 26.1 kilometers from Light House to Poonamallee Depot.
Overcoming Challenges for Successful Construction
According to a press note issued by CMRL, this specific section of Corridor 4 comprises five single-decker and four double-decker stations. The construction of these stations required a total of 2,255 piles to support the structure and transfer the load to the ground. However, the piling process was not without its challenges.
CMRL had to face the formidable task of diverting 24.45 kilometers of utilities to accommodate the construction work. Additionally, the team had to redesign pile layouts to ensure the safeguarding of critical infrastructure, including a 1,200 mm water line. This involved meticulous planning and execution to avoid any disruptions to vital services.
One of the major achievements of the project was the successful diversion of a 1,500 mm water line. CMRL managed to complete this task without causing any disruptions to the water supply, showcasing their expertise in carrying out complex infrastructure projects.
Rapid Progress of Phase II Construction
The completion of piling work marks a significant milestone in the Phase II construction of the Metro Rail. As the construction work progresses, it is noteworthy that the elevated line is currently moving ahead of the underground line in terms of development.
CMRL has prioritized Corridor 4 and plans to open the first segment of Phase II, spanning from Poonamallee to Porur Junction, by December 2025. This ambitious timeline reflects CMRL’s commitment to provide efficient and sustainable transportation solutions to the residents of Chennai.
