Chennai is soon to get its second airport, i.e. the Greenfield Airport in Parandur, which is 70 km away from the city. According to Chief Minister M K Stalin, the estimated cost for the airport is Rs. 20,000 Crores. Chennai’s new airport would be designed so that it could accommodate 10 crore passengers annually compared to the present airport, which can only accommodate 2.2 crore passengers annually.
The second airport in Chennai will be located in Parandur, near Sriperumbudur; the Kancheepuram district will have two parallel runways and spread across 4000 acres. The plan is to build it as a swanky aero city with all the amenities for repairs and maintenance, taxiways, dedicated terminals for cargo, commercial shops, and aviation ancillary units.
According to the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India, introducing the second airport in Chennai will enhance the city’s global mobility and connectivity whilst contributing to improved aviation and real estate sectors. The airport’s location is near open agricultural land, making the acquisition process easier. However, there are some residential areas as well which the government would acquire for the construction of the airport, for which the government is in talks with the residents regarding compensations amongst other things.

The city’s connectivity with the airport is also kept in mind during the introduction; hence, the government has announced the extension of metro rail to Sriperumbudur. Also, the initiation of some connecting roadways and elevated roads are proposed for better connectivity of the city to Chennai’s new airport.
According to some sources, the real estate and aviation sectors are said to increase in Chennai, given that with Chennai’s new airport, the whole area would be developed, and the prices will soar high for real estate as the connectivity, and all the amenities in the area are going to be of global level.
Chennai’s new airport will be a good bonus for the already existing and busy Chennai International airport. The second airport in Chennai will be capable of holding much bigger aircrafts with over 600 seating capacity. The new airport will provide a much bigger area and runways for bigger aircraft to make it accessible at a global level.
