The exchange rate is subject to change multiple times a day. Currency pairs are used to measure currencies.

The following article explains the relationship between the foreign exchange conversion of CHF to INR.

Overview of CHF(Swiss Franc)

CHF is the official currency of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. CHF stands for Confoederatio Helvetica franc, which is in Latin. CHF is the world’s seventh most traded currency since it is a safe currency.  Campione d’Italia, Liechtenstein and Switzerland are the only European countries that still deal in francs. The banks and financial institutions often call it Swissies.

Since Switzerland has four national languages, namely French, German, Italian and Romansh, ‘francs’ all these languages are present on the bank notes. Swiss National Bank is responsible for issuing and printing the Swiss francs.

CHF’s demand rose suddenly post the economic crisis of 2008. Even though the imports in the countries are cheap, tourism and export are difficult because Swiss products and services are expensive. The Swiss currency has denominations of coins and notes.

Key Points

  • The Swiss franc is the country’s official currency and is designated by the ISO code CHF.
  • CHF is an extraordinarily powerful and stable currency due to the country’s zero-inflation policy and political independence.
  • Because it appreciates during times of political and economic crisis, the CHF is known as a safe-haven currency. Despite this, it is not considered a reserve currency.

History of CHF(Swiss Franc)

The majority of Swiss currency before 1798 can be traced back to the old French currency livre tournois. The 25 cantons and half-cantons, 16 cities, and abbeys were among the approximately 75 organisations that produced coins in Switzerland before 1798, and as a result, there were about 860 different coins in circulation with various money systems, denominations and values.

The Helvetic Republic, a republic of France’s sister that existed between 1798 and 1803, introduced francs. This event further complicated the Swiss currency system. The Swiss Confederacy was restored in 1815. There were 8000 different coins in Switzerland. The coins were being issued by multitudes of entities like cantons, abbeys, principalities, lordships, cities and lordships. These coins were a combination of coins found before 1798 and the ones issued by the Helvetica Republic.

Presently, the Swiss currency is backed up with a good percentage of gold reserves. The Swiss National Bank stopped depending on the floating exchange rate in comparison to the euro and fixed the euro at 1.2000 Swiss francs per euro. Again in January 2015, the SNB scraped the peg and allowed the Swiss currency to float. Soon the Swiss stocks fell and many companies and investors faced grave losses.

Overview of INR(Indian Rupees)

Indian Rupee or INR is the currency of India. The Indian currency is managed by the Reserve Bank of India. The name rupiya was used by Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century after he introduced silver coins. The present denominations of Indian Rupees are ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10,₹20,₹50, ₹100, ₹500 and ₹2000. Due to Demonetisation in 2016, ₹500 and  ₹1000 notes were replaced with the new ₹500 note and ₹2000 notes.

Recently, the Reserve Bank of India has decided to use Indian Rupee for trade purposes. Mauritius, Russia and Sri Lanka are expected to sign up for the same. After the RBI signs off, the Indian rupee will be the official foreign currency of Sri Lanka. This internationalisation of the rupee will also attract countries like Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh.

History of INR(Indian Rupees)

The history of the Indian Rupee can be traced back to the 6th century BCE along with Lydian states and Chinese wen. In Arthashastra, Chanakya mentions silver, gold, copper and lead coins as rūpyarūpa, suvarṇarūpa, tamrarūpa and sīsarūpa. Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century introduced silver coins and called them rupaiya which were used by the Mughals, the Marathas and the British.

The General Bank of Bengal and Bihar, Bengal Bank and the Bank of Hindostan introduced the first paper currency in India between 1770 and 1832. The Reserve Bank of India was established in 1935. The RBI issued the first ₹5 note in 1938. In 1957-67, one, two, three, five and ten paise coins were issued. The last update of Indian currency was demonetisation and the introduction of ₹20 coins.
