Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA) (IATA: BOM, ICAO: VABB), erstwhile known as Sahar International Airport, serves as the main airport, for the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. According to Airports Council International, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport was the 47th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic in 2014 and is the second busiest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic and international traffic after the capital city of Delhi. Regarding cargo traffic, the airport continues to be the busiest in the nation. It is located 37 kilometres north of the heart of Mumbai.

The airport oversees over 780 aircraft movements each day. It has five operational terminals spread out over a total functional area of 750 hectares (1,850 acres).

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

India’s and Mumbai’s (new Bombay) first airport, the “Juhu Aerodrome,” opened its doors in 1932. It was less than 2 kilometres from the actual CSMIA site and would transport postal delivery planes. In 1940, when authorities decided to find a new location, Santa Cruz was selected as the site of Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport.

Mumbai Airport was managed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation post-independence, and a new terminal opened in 1958. The British Royal Air Force had used the airport during World War I.  Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai was handed over to the International Airports Authority of India in 1972, and over the following three decades, development plans were swiftly completed.

The airport has grown to be one of the busiest in the country and the world by the turn of the millennium for travellers purchasing airline tickets to India.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport manages about 950 aircraft movements on an everyday basis and has two operational terminals spread out over a total of 750 hectares (1,850 acres) of land. On December 9, 2018, it dealt a record 1,007 aircraft movements, bludgeoning the previous mark of 1,003 aircraft movements in one day set in June 2018. Who Owns Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

A group led by GVK Industries Ltd., Airports Company South Africa, and Bidvest was successful in winning the bid to manage and run CSMIA. To accomplish this goal, the consortium (74% ownership) and the Airports Authority of India (26% ownership) established Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL). Since then, MIAL has made significant improvements to the CSIA’s aesthetics, design, and passenger amenities. These improvements include the renovation of the domestic terminals 1A and 1B, the opening of the international terminals 2B and 2C for passengers purchasing direct flight tickets to Mumbai, and the construction of the brand-new domestic terminals 1C and T2. Along with these ground-side enhancements, MIAL also worked to restore both runways and install new taxiways and aprons.

The first airport in India to implement CUTE (Common Use Terminal Equipment) check-in systems and common-use self-service kiosks is CSIA, which was made possible by an agreement MIAL made with air transport IT expert SITA in February 2008.

The Adani Group purchased the stakes of GVK and Bidvest in MIAL in February 2021, giving it a 74% controlling interest in the company.

Terminals

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has two terminals for scheduled commercial passenger services. Terminal 1 in Santa Cruz is the terminal for domestic flights, and Terminal 2 in Sahar is the terminal for both domestic and international flights. 

Terminal 1 

Known locally as Santa Cruz Airport, Terminal 1 is where most low-cost airlines run their domestic operations. This was the old Santa Cruz building, which served as Mumbai’s first passenger terminal and was previously integrated. After the Sahar building opened for international operations, Terminal 1 was renamed and converted to a domestic operations terminal. Over the years, it has undergone various renovations, the most recent of which occurred in the 2000s. Following its permanent closure in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was further split into Terminals 1A, 1B, and 1C. SpiceJet, GoAir, and IndiGo previously used it, but after Jet Airways went out of business on April 17, 2019, several of the Terminal 1B airlines shifted some of their flights to the more recent T2 structure.

Terminal 2

The new Terminal 2, sometimes known as T2, was built in order to distinguish it from the original Terminal 2 structure. The contract for its construction was given to Larsen & Toubro (L&T). It has taken the place of the former International Terminal and has a land size of 210,000 square metres. The second passenger terminal at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is the nation’s first vertical passenger terminal. It is a four-level integrated terminal that was constructed as part of the $2 billion modernization development for the airport that was launched in 2007.

Domestic and international passenger services are combined in Terminal 2 of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Built in a cross shape, it allows for swift passenger circulation and effective terminal operations. It has a 45-metre-tall, four-story building of 4.5 million square feet. The terminal has the capacity to hold 9,900 passengers at peak hours.
