In a recent announcement, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has expressed its commitment to tackle the issue of illegal dumping and improve responsible waste disposal by establishing dedicated construction and demolition (C&D) waste collection points. The civic body has joined forces with the Air Pollution Action Group (A-PAG) to address the increasing levels of air pollution and effectively manage C&D waste in the city.
Strategic Collection Points Identified
To effectively address the problem of illegal dumping, the MCD has identified 49 strategic collection points across different zones in the city. In addition, 35 more collection points have been established to improve accessibility. These collection points not only aim to streamline waste disposal, but also to significantly reduce the instances of illegal dumping. Since October, the designated storage areas have successfully collected 52,000 tonnes of debris, resulting in a commendable 38 percent reduction in illegal dumping from October to November. This positive impact clarifies the effectiveness of these collection points in curbing unlawful waste disposal.
Expansion of Collection Points
To address the growing demands for waste disposal, the MCD is working on establishing new collection points in the Narela, Shahdara North, Shahdara South, and Rohini zones. These additional locations are strategically positioned to cater to the waste disposal needs of citizens residing in these areas.
Efficient Communication and Accessibility
The MCD also emphasized its efforts to raise awareness about the C&D waste collection sites. Citizens can now easily access information about these collection points through the MCD 311 app and the MCD website. The locations of these collection points have been carefully chosen within a 2-3 km radius for the convenience of citizens. This strategic placement allows individuals to easily dispose of their waste in a responsible and efficient manner.
Strengthening Citizen Engagement
Recognizing the importance of citizen engagement in waste management, the municipal corporation has conducted 213 meetings with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). These meetings aim to understand the concerns and suggestions of citizens while creating awareness about the importance of responsible waste disposal. Moreover, compliance training has been provided to 180 waste transporters to ensure a comprehensive approach to waste management.
Conclusion
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has taken a commendable step in establishing dedicated C&D waste collection points across the city. With the help of strategic planning and citizen engagement, the MCD aims to reduce illegal dumping and promote responsible waste disposal. The initiative highlights the corporation’s commitment to combating air pollution and building a sustainable environment for its citizens. Citizens are encouraged to utilize the designated collection points and play an active role in keeping the city clean and environmentally friendly.
