Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited has given a whole new meaning to rapid mass transportation in India. The new system for commuting is well-planned, has an air-conditioned transportation mode,  is comfortable and eco-friendly. The state-of-the-art rail corporation was was the first transportation mode to revolutionise the rapid mass commuting in the country.

Currently, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd has established 390.14 kilometres of metro railways routes with 286 stations. The metro stations include the Noida, Greater Noida and Gurugram metro routes. At present, with the help of DMRC’s initiative and fast construction, a large mammoth of areas can be easily reached. The corporation duly completed the project  within the stipulated budget given by the Government of India.

With its idea to bring mass rapid transportation, the corporation crossed the borders of Delhi and reached other cities like Greater Noida, Noida, Ballabgarh, Bahadurpur, Faridabad and Gurugram. The metro trains throughout the cities work on the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. It is a signalling technology that helps move trains in shorter frequencies. The technology is also being used by the Noida-Greater Noida metro corridor, Aqua Line. This new line was also constructed by the Delhi Metro Corporation in place of the Noida Corporation and is being operated by DMRC. Furthermore, the Rapid Metro line connecting Delhi and Gurugram is also an added 11.6-kilometre metro line which can be accessed by changing metros at the Sikanderpur Metro Station.

The corporation is further divided into two segments – one segment is the projects segment responsible for the construction and the other segment is solely responsible for maintaining and operating functions of the Delhi Metro rail named Operation and Maintenance (O&M) division.

DMRC to Bear The Loss Incurred During Pandemic by State and Central Government

21st September 2022

Managing Director of Delhi Metro Corporation, Vikas Kumar, said that the current use of DMRC is 46 people on daily basis. Pre-pandemic this number was 61 lakhs people per day. The decrease in number has heavily affected the corporation as the metro rails were inoperable for five long months in 2020. Soon, with more offices and institutions opening their doors, the number of people travelling through Delhi Metro rail will increase. He also mentioned that it is expected that the number will be back like pre-pandemic times by February 2023. MD Vikas Kumar also said that both the state and central government will bear the loss incurred by the Delhi Metro Corporation during the pandemic. After this support is granted, then the corporation will think about fare hikes on the metro rails.

Commuter Footfall after the Pandemic Expected to Increase Gradually

22nd September 2022

The commuter footfall is less than what it was in 2019. However, it  is slowly increasing. Commuter footfall refers to the number of people who entered the interchange at Delhi Metro Corporation station and changed the metro lines, according to the official of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The average commuter footfall was recorded at 1,23,793 in August 2019 whereas the average commuter footfall in August 2022 is recorded at 1,02,033. The loss in commuter footfall also means that they might have opted for another connectivity or another mode of transportation. This footfall is gradually increasing and is expected to be back on track in a year.
