A major booster for traffic control and faster connectivity of Capital City to some of the key cities in India came in the form of highways and road construction projects.
It now appears that destinations are becoming effortlessly accessible via Delhi roads within a few hours. And we are talking about destination places like Mumbai, Dehradun, Chandigarh, Ajmer, and so on. With the completion of the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi-Meerut Expressway, the connectivity has been boosted, making key cities closer to Delhi. This has also paved the way for much-needed traffic control and easing congestion for incoming traffic from other cities towards Delhi. It has been noted that anyone commuting from Jaipur to Delhi Airport can arrive at the location in about two-and-half hours. Furthermore, Delhi and Dehradun have become two-and-half hours closer as well. What is intriguing is that one can reach Mumbai from Delhi in merely twelve hours of drive.
The Government of India has made major plans for making these connective webs an improved reality by the end of 2024. The proposal includes six super expressways, including the already completed Eastern Peripheral Expressway and Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which will boost the connectivity and bring various key cities closer to Delhi.
The Completed Projects Include the Following:
- Delhi-Gurgoan,
- Delhi-Meerut,
- Eastern Peripheral Expressway,
- Western Peripheral Expressway, and
- Sohna Elevated.
The Projects that are Under Construction Include the Following:
- Dwarka Expressway, which will connect Manesar and Jaipur Highway
- Delhi – Mumbai Expressway, which will also connect Jaipur and Jewar airport
- Delhi – Dehradun Expressway, which will connect Ambala and Shamli
- Urban Extension Road – II
- Urban Extension Road – III connecting Delhi Rohtak National Highway
The initiative came to ease the traffic coming and going out of the capital city, which mostly resorts to the congested arterial roads. With the highways in place, commuters will have a hassle-free experience enhanced by the reduced wait time. This is evident because once the Delhi to Dehradun Expressway is inaugurated, people can take the road to reach Dehradun faster. Although the route will be 15 km long, there is scope for commuters to travel non-stop at higher acceleration. Moreover, Delhi Mumbai Expressway can easily provide commuters coming from Mumbai to fasten up their trips to the Akshardham, where they will be joining the elevated route to move further up.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while inaugurating the Pragati Maidan integrated underpass tunnel corridor, said that he envisages Delhi as one of the best-connected capital cities in the world. He went on to list the expressways that will be soon put under construction and ease the commute experience of the people.
Another major step to curb the congestion of Delhi roads authorities have opened up the Ambala – Narnaul Expressway, a six-lane route that will potentially divert the vehicular traffic coming in and out of the capital city. Moreover, the expressway will shorten the time and distance for anyone travelling from Ambala to Jaipur or vice versa. The Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana believes that the Ambala – Narnaul Expressway will boost the momentum of the industrial and economic growth of the state.
To add to the amenities, a trial run of the upcoming Delhi-Jaipur E-Highway for the National Highway for Electric Vehicles will be commenced in September 2022. The 278 km stretch will incorporate EV charging stations, thereby improving the carbon footprints. This will be the longest Electronic Vehicle tech run in India, previously held by the trial run made on Yamuna Expressway.
