But in the year 1950, an earthquake hit the town on August 15 which changed the course of the Brahmaputra River. The changed course swamped half of the town within a few days. On the sixth anniversary of Bhupen Hazarika, the announcement on the name of the bridge was made by the Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Assam.
