The Andhra Pradesh government has taken a significant leap in modernizing its public transportation system by approving plans to introduce double-decker metro systems in two major cities, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam.
Government Officials Rally Behind the Project
Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu recently held a meeting with municipal and urban development officials to review the project, which promises to transform the urban landscape of both cities. The ambitious project will span a total of 142.9 km, with 66 km in Vijayawada and 76.9 km in Visakhapatnam.
Unique Design to Maximize Space
One of the key features of the double-decker metro system will be its innovative design, with the metro rail constructed above flyovers and roads at ground level. This will not only minimize land acquisition costs but also reduce congestion on the roads below.
Phase-Wise Implementation to begin soon
The first phase of the project in Visakhapatnam will include a 15 km stretch from Madhurawada to Thatichetlapalem and another 4 km from Gajuwaka to the Steel Plant. In Vijayawada, the system will cover 4.7 km from Ramavarappadu Ring Road to Nidamanuru. The phased implementation will ensure a smooth and efficient roll-out of the project.
Funding and Next Steps
Chief Minister Naidu has confirmed that discussions with the Centre will soon be held to secure funding and move the project forward. The aim is to have the operations commence within four years, marking a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s transportation infrastructure development.
