In India, riding any vehicle is only valid if you have an up-to-date driving licence. Up-to-date means that your driving licence shouldn’t be expired and in case it is, you must apply for a Driving Licence renewal.
A driving licence works as a legal document that permits you to drive any vehicle across the nation. Another major benefit of owning a DL is it also works as one’s identity proof.
Therefore, it is crucial to renew the licence after its expiration or at least one month prior to its expiration date as per the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. If you haven’t applied for a driving licence renewal and are still driving with an expired DL then it will be considered a punishable offence and you have to pay the fine as per the law.

Why is Renewing Your Driving Licence Important?
As per the Indian Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, if an individual possesses any vehicle he/she must also hold a valid driving licence otherwise, it will be considered a punishable offence under section 177 of the Motor Act, 1988. The violators with an expired driving licence have to pay fines as well.
A driving licence is an official document issued by the Indian government that authorises an individual to drive a certain category of vehicle for which they hold a driver’s licence. Therefore, if your driving licence is expired or tends to be expired after a month then you must fill out Form 9 for driving licence renewal.
If your licence expired more than 30 days ago you can still apply for driving licence renewal by paying a fine. The fine will be calculated from the 31st day after the expiration date. Another vital fact is that renewal is also possible even after 5 years from the expiry date.
Furthermore, if you want to acquire a licence from another state, you have to submit a No Objection Certificate (NoC) and provide confirmation of DL issued by the original licensing authority.
