In a move aimed at promoting gender equality and empowerment, DTDC Express Ltd., India’s leading express logistics company, opened its first all-women-operated branch in Mumbai on International Women’s Day. The branch was inaugurated by Subhashish Chakraborty, Founder and Chairman, along with Abhishek Chakraborty, Executive Director, and Ms. Arpita C. Mittra, Director of Customer Experience. This groundbreaking initiative aims to encourage women to pursue opportunities in the logistics sector while inspiring inclusivity.
Closing the Gender Gap in the Logistics Industry
Despite progress being made in various sectors across the globe, gender inequality continues to persist. The logistics industry is no exception, with women accounting for only 40% of the global workforce, as per the World Bank report of 2022. In India, this gender imbalance is even more pronounced, with women representing a mere 26% of the workforce. Recognizing this discrepancy, DTDC Express Ltd. has commenced its journey towards becoming an equal-opportunity employer, starting with the inauguration of the all-women-operated branch in Mumbai.
Empowering Women in Logistics
Located in Sakinaka, Mumbai, the new branch will be entirely operated by women and is expected to manage an impressive volume of consignments each month. With over 57,000 deliveries and 63,000 bookings, these dedicated female employees will oversee various logistics operations including order placements, tracking, delivery, and returns. The branch aspires to showcase the capabilities of women and break the prevalent stereotypes surrounding their participation in the logistics sector.
A Step Towards Gender Diversity and Inclusivity
Abhishek Chakraborty, Executive Director of DTDC Express Ltd., expressed his confidence in this groundbreaking initiative. He highlighted the company’s vision of a future where diversity goes beyond being a mere subject and becomes a way of life. The all-women operated branch aims to lead the logistics sector in embracing inclusivity while providing equal opportunities for growth and success to its female employees. Fostering an Inclusive Culture Across the Organization Arpita C. Mittra, Director of Customer Experience at DTDC Express Ltd., stressed the significance of the initiative.
With four women on its board, the company is committed to leading by example and actively embracing diversity across all levels of the organization. “We believe in fostering a culture of inclusion, and our all-women-operated branch is a step in the right direction,” said Mittra, emphasizing the company’s commitment to championing gender diversity.
Expanding the Initiative
The launch of the all-women operated branch in Mumbai marks the beginning of DTDC Express Ltd.’s journey towards establishing gender-inclusive operations throughout the country. The company has plans to extend this initiative to other major metropolitan areas and aims to replicate the same in every significant city. By inaugurating this branch and renowned future expansions, DTDC Express Ltd. reiterates its dedication to fostering a more equitable and inclusive atmosphere within the logistics industry.
