Dynamic Leadership and Vision Force Family Succession in Patel Engineering

Patel Engineering Mourns Sudden Loss of Chairman and MD, Rupen Patel

The construction engineering company, Patel Engineering, is reeling from the premature passing of its Chairman and Managing Director, Rupen Pravinbhai Patel. The 57-year-old, who served as the third-generation leader of the organization, passed away on July 5th, leaving behind a profound sense of grief among those who knew and worked with him.

A Legacy Shaped by Leadership and Vision

Rupen Patel took the helm as Chairman and Managing Director in 2017 and quickly made a significant impact on Patel Engineering and its employees. With a career spanning over 30 years, Rupen played a crucial role in leading the company and was known for his expertise and strategic vision.

After completing his MBA from Babson College in the United States, Rupen joined Patel Engineering as an advisor. However, he did not confine himself to a desk job. Instead, he spent his early years in the field, working at project sites to gain firsthand experience and a deep understanding of the on-ground situation. This knowledge and his sharp business acumen propelled him forward in his career.

From starting as a Director in October 1995, Rupen quickly ascended to become the Executive Director by September 1996. As the Chairman and Managing Director, his leadership qualities shone through as he navigated the company through challenges while seizing opportunities for growth.

Paving the Way in the Hydropower Sector

Under Rupen Patel’s leadership, Patel Engineering established itself as one of the fastest-growing engineering firms in hydropower. The company’s commitment to sustainability and quality has helped it carve a niche in the industry.

With approximately 60 percent of its current order book focused on hydropower initiatives, Patel Engineering stands as a leader in sustainable energy solutions. It has successfully completed around 40 hydroelectric projects, contributing to an installed capacity of approximately 11,000 MW. Additionally, it is actively involved in constructing another 8,000 MW from the 18,000 MW hydropower projects currently under development in India.

Rupen Patel’s forward-thinking approach and dedication to transformative projects empowered local communities and bolstered India’s energy sector. His legacy centers around his contributions to significant hydropower initiatives that continue to generate positive change.

Robust Order Book and Steady Growth

Despite the loss of its esteemed leader, Patel Engineering’s order book for 2024 remained robust and is reflective of the company’s sustainable growth and diverse project acquisition. As of December 2023, the order book stood at approximately Rs 191 billion, encompassing ongoing projects and recent wins in sectors such as hydropower, irrigation, roads, buildings, dams, and tunnels.

Adding to its list of achievements, Patel Engineering, along with its joint venture partners, was declared the lowest bidder (L1) for new projects worth Rs 15.67 billion in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The company holds a share valued at Rs 10.06 billion in these projects focused on constructing a pressure irrigation system and a lift irrigation scheme.

The company’s continued ability to secure substantial orders showcases its strong revenue growth and ensures a promising pipeline of projects in the future. Anchored by a strategic focus on financial management, debt reduction, and employee growth, Patel Engineering is poised for an upward trajectory in the infrastructure sector.

Continuing the Legacy

In the wake of Rupen Patel’s passing, Patel Engineering has strived to sustain the company’s operations seamlessly. Rupen’s wife, Janky Patel, a graduate of Mumbai University, has been appointed the Chairperson of Patel Engineering. Holding a non-executive position, she vows to carry forward Rupen’s vision and lead the organization with the utmost dedication during this challenging period.

Motivating colleagues and supporting Janky Patel is Kavita Shirvaikar. Having stepped down from her previous position as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), she has been promoted to the role of Managing Director. This change in leadership ensures continuity and stability within the company.

Remembering Rupen Patel

Rupen Patel’s untimely passing has not gone unnoticed, as family and friends gather online to remember and pay tribute to his kindness and personal connections. An online obituary has been created to serve as a special keepsake Tribute Book, where memories and cherished moments can be shared. Each memory left on the obituary will be automatically included in the book, becoming a lasting homage to Rupen’s impact on the lives he touched.

Through Rupen’s exemplary leadership, Patel Engineering has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the construction engineering sector. His loss is deeply felt, but his legacy will undoubtedly be carried on, as the company continues to grow and shape India’s infrastructure landscape.
