Interestingly, Tusshar has rented out his duplex just recently. He is now renting an apartment in Ekta’s building, Krishna-1. When asked about this development by the media, he confirmed the same.

Breaking Into the Television Industry

Ekta Kapoor began her career at 17 as an intern for advertising filmmaker Kailash Surendranath. Following her internship, she decided to become a producer and requested financial assistance from her father, Jeetendra. Her production banner Balaji Telefilms rolled out 6 pilots, and all of them got rejected, resulting in a loss of around Rs.50 lakh.

But Kapoor never backed down. In 1995, two of her shows Mano Ya Na Mano and Hum Paanch finally got selected and aired on Zee TV. In the same year, Doordarshan also selected her music-based show Dhun Dhamaka. Hum Paanch, a sitcom that revolved around 5 daughters, went on to become very popular. It became Balaji’s first success that people still remember.

By the millennium of 2000, Ekta launched multiple shows starting with the alphabet ‘K’. This included Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kohi Apna Sa, Kabhii Sautan Kabhi Saheli, Kahin Kisi Roz, Kahiin To Hoga, Kasautii Zindagi Kay and more. People, especially women, were hooked to all of these shows. Within a year, she even bagged the title of the Best Entrepreneur of the Year. 

In one year, she had more than 30 hours of television shows per week. Out of the 34 TV shows she launched, 20 were listed as the most-watched series across channels like Star Plus, Sony, and Zee TV.

The Growth of Ekta Kapoor’s Production House

After creating a large chunk of shows catering to the Hindi-speaking audience, Ekta’s Balaji production house ventured into regional languages. This involved creating TV shows in Tamil, Marathi, Bengali, and Gujarati languages. She has, thus, far produced more than 130 Indian daily soaps till now.

Along with TV, she also started exploring the world of films with movie production in various genres like comedy, horror, thriller, action, and drama. A few of her noteworthy works include Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta, Krishna Cottage, Shootout At Lokhandwala, and Mission Istanbul, in which she had casted some of the biggest stars in Bollywood.  

Her passion for films became more prominent to the public eye when she offered a learning ground to budding filmmakers and film enthusiasts via her own media training school – the Institute of Creative Excellence. Stepping up and adapting to the new digital age of OTT platforms, she launched the Alt Balaji production house, a subscription-based video on demand (SVOD) service.
