Kolkata is steadily witnessing the development of new infrastructure, particularly in terms of roads and flyovers. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already inaugurated the 4.4 kilometer long Garden Reach Flyover which has four lanes and links the Brooklyn Crossing near Ramnagar. The new flyover has been developed for Rs. 340 crore and will link the Garden Reach Brookyln Crossing in South Kolkata’s port area with the Majerhat Railway Station near the Taratola industrial zone.
The new flyover will benefit people residing in the port area immensely and they will be able to access several areas more easily in Kolkata. The entire stretch mentioned above, usually takes anywhere between 30-40 minutes to cover on account of traffic congestion in the port area. The road that is taken by most cars to cover this stretch runs in a direction which is different as well. Now, residents can cover the entire run in just 10 minutes or even less.
Several new developments have been transforming Kolkata over the last 6 years which include beautification of several parts of the city to drainage and roadways and also new infrastructure development. The Chief Minister has already confirmed the development of another flyover in this stretch and this will connect Bata and Jinjirabazar. This flyover will be built for approximately Rs. 250 crore and should be ready for commuters within a period of 8 months. This flyover will span 7.5 kilometres and there are plans to integrate it as part of a 30 kilometer elevated road running to Garia from Joka.
This will make it the longest flyover in India as per the dream of the Chief Minister. Several other flyovers have been planned since the Government has allocated a sum of Rs. 12, 180 crore for infrastructure development over the next few years. These proposed flyovers include the Taratola to Tollygunge to Prince Anwar Shah Road to Jadavpur Phari flyover which will boost real estate hugely, particularly in fast growing realty locations like Tollygunge where premium projects like Merlin Verve and Merlin The One are coming up. The Garden Reach flyover should boost real estate prospects in Taratola and other parts of the port area in tandem with areas like New Alipore and Behala which connect easily to Taratola.
A flyover has also been proposed between Ganesh Chandra Avenue and New Market and also between Tala and Dunlop. Other proposed flyovers will cover the stretch of the Maniktala Crossing along the AJC Bose Road and also between the College Square Crossing and Salt Lake. There will be a flyover linking Ballygunge Phari and Park Circus and also EM Bypass and New Town as per the Government’s plans.
