Over the past two days, the Kochi Corporation has received a deluge of calls from women looking for information about She Lodge, the all-women boarding facility established by the local body. The Kerala government introduced the She Lodge initiative, which entails building many hostels for women in each state district. The state government with She Lodge aims to provide female travellers with a safe and affordable option for travel and make Kerala a lucrative destination for such travellers. The project strives to provide all women and children with access to a safe and inexpensive space.
The lodges across the state will accommodate numerous travellers and have amenities like kitchens, dining rooms, all-female staff, offices, and vehicle services.

What is the Hype All About?
Women responded overwhelmingly to Kochi Mayor M. Anilkumar’s Facebook post on the She Lodge review meeting. The facility of She Lodge is to be ready in Kochi on the occasion of Onam. The facility, built with a budget of 4.80 crores, was installed in the Kochi Corporation’s building and is close to the Ernakulam Town railway station.
There will be about 85 female-only rooms available. According to P.R. Renish, head of the Development Standing Committee, 60% of the rooms would be set aside for people willing to rent them every month, and the remaining rooms would be placed aside for women travelling to Kochi for a variety of reasons on a daily rental basis.

Logistics that the Kochi Corporation Aims to Provide!
The civic organisation intends to provide the rooms at fair prices; the room tariff and other specifics will be decided upon following deliberations in the Corporation Council.
According to Mr. Renish, the enormous response and inquiries about the facility that followed the Facebook post showed how much interest the idea had aroused. Kudumbashree units will offer food for the residents. He added that an all-women team would manage the hotel staff and facilities.
The Kochi Corporation intends to choose a company to manage the facility competently. The Corporation Council will soon make a judgment on a few ideas that had been brought before the civic body, according to Mr. Renish. The building still needed some final touches but will be tended very soon.
What is Kudumbashree?
The administration and upkeep of She Lodge is the responsibility of Kudumbashree, a self-help organisation with more than 40 lakh women.
State mission manager for Kudumbashree, Jaison T.J., revealed that “The Kerala Government’s fantasy project is She Lodge. In various regions of the state, several organisations manage hostels that are comparable to one another. But this is the first time a public organisation has done so.” To widen the scope, the project also seeks to integrate with other Kudumbashree initiatives, such as Kudumbashree Cafe and She Taxi.
Kudumbashree currently successfully manages She Lodge in Thrissur, which was inaugurated in 2018. Although there are similar facilities in Kozhikode and Malappuram, they were operated by private organisations. Still, the one in Thrissur was the first to be run by a self-help group.

The She Lodge is designed for women who do not have the money to stay one night in a luxurious hotel. Kochi Corporation will charge minimal fees for both lodging and meals. The civic body is even considering employing former service members on duty for security. She Lodge is a great facility provided keeping women security in mind and is a great initiative towards inclusivity and women’s safety.
