Gorakhpur Link Expressway is a new project that is currently under development. It is a 91 kilometre long total access-controlled expressway in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is expected to connect to the Salarpur village on the Purvanchal Expressway in the Azamgarh district. It starts from the Jaitpur Village in Gorakhpur. Contributing to the all-round development of UP, it not only promises pollution control and diminished fuel consumption upon completion but also boosts income in various sectors like commerce, tourism, agriculture, etc.

The UPEIDA initiated the Gorakhpur Expressway project. This project is currently under process. It is a four-lane road that connects to the Jaitpur route and the Purvanchal Expressway in Salarpur in Azamgarh. It is a 91.35-kilometre long route.

The Gorakhpur Link Expressway project was announced in 2018. The land acquisition for the project was made in February 2019, following which the construction commenced in February 2020. The control of the project was taken by the Apco Infratech and Dilip Buildcon and had a project completion deadline of 36 months. It was initiated with 110 metres of ROW.

Current Status Of Gorakhpur Expressway

At present, the project has made progress of 29% (this progress was made till 8th November 2021). Initially, the project was estimated to be finished by March 2022, but as the progress has been slow, the same will now be done by mid of 2023.

The Gorakhpur Link Expressway will connect the Jaitpur village on the Gorakhpur Bypass in the same district to the Salarpur Village on the south side of Jalalpur located on the Purvanchal Expressway in the Azamgarh district.

This expressway will be crossing about four districts in Uttar Pradesh. These are:

Gorakhpur
Ambedkar Nagar
Sant Kabir Nagar
Azamgarh

Gorakhpur Link Expressway route map

The amount that has been spent to construct the Gorakhpur Expressway is about INR 3,024 crores (this amount excludes the amount spent on the land). The project will occupy 1,095 hectares, almost 2,710 acres of the acquired land.

Here are the key highlights of the Gorakhpur Expressway.

  • The Gorakhpur Link Expressway has provision for service roads.
  • It will also include vehicle, pedestrian and animal underpasses.
  • There will be 16 vehicular underpasses, 50 light vehicle underpasses and 35 pedestrian underpasses.          
  • The Expressway will also include two toll plazas, three ramp plazas and seven flyovers.         
  • The Gorakhpur Expressway will also have seven major and 27 minor bridges.         

Initially, the date that was decided to complete the construction process of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway was March 2022. But due to the pandemic and nationwide lockdown, construction of the expressway slowed down. It is estimated that the expressway will now be functional from March 2023.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Aditya Nath announced the construction of the Gorakhpur Expressway in 2018. The land acquisition work started in February 2019. By the end of November 2021, the construction process had reached 30%.
