Government Approves Namma Metro Phase 3A for Traffic Congestion Mitigation

Namma Metro Phase 3A Receives Government Approval for Hebbal to Sarjapur Route

In a significant development, the Government of India’s Urban Development Department has granted approval for the much-anticipated Namma Metro Phase 3A project in Bengaluru. This project will connect Hebbal to Sarjapur’s Tech Hub, spanning approximately 37 kilometers, and is expected to bring a much-needed respite to commuters struggling with traffic congestion.

Upcoming Union Cabinet Approval and Funding Decisions

With the approval from the Urban Development Department secured, the next crucial step is to seek the Union Cabinet’s approval. Once approved, the finance department will review the detailed project report (DPR) to determine the funding allocation for the project. Originally estimated at Rs 165 billion for the fiscal year 2022-23, the project cost has escalated to Rs 270 billion following the submission of the detailed project report.

Metro’s Expansion and Role in Easing Traffic Congestion

The approval of the Phase 3A plan marks a significant achievement as this is the first central government-level nod for a project aimed at substantially reducing traffic congestion in Bengaluru. The Union Cabinet had previously given the green light to the Metro Phase 3 project in August last year. This further demonstrates the government’s commitment to improving the city’s transportation infrastructure.

DPR and Proposed Stations

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) submitted the detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 3A to the state government in June of the previous year. After the state government’s review, it was forwarded to the central government for approval. As per the DPR, the project will encompass 28 stations comprising both underground and elevated sections.

The elevated portion of the route will run from Sarjapur to Koramangala 3rd Block and will feature 15 stations, catering to the burgeoning and tech-centric areas. To connect Koramangala 3rd Block with the Veterinary College, an underground section will be built with 11 stations. Additionally, elevated stations are planned for Ganga Nagar and Hebbal areas.

Addressing Concerns in Hebbal

With regards to the planned underground route in Hebbal, recent discussions have taken place between the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the city development department. These discussions aim to address concerns and ensure the smooth implementation of the phase in this area.

The Namma Metro Phase 3A project’s approval for the Hebbal to Sarjapur route holds immense significance for the citizens of Bengaluru. By expanding the Metro network and providing connectivity to key areas, this project promises to greatly alleviate traffic congestion and make commuting more convenient for residents and tech professionals. The awaited Union Cabinet approval and subsequent funding decisions will mark another crucial step in turning this ambitious project into a reality.
