Griha Pravesh refers to the ceremony one does while moving into a new house. It is a Hindu ceremony held to ward off evil spirits and negative energy from the house and usher in positivity as and when you start a new journey in your new house. The puja takes place in various phases, or acts of worship, starting from when the house’s construction occurs and at the entry or ‘Pravesh’ into the new house. Once the house has been made, the owner should, with the help of an astrologer or a priest, choose an auspicious day and time and do the puja. Three variations of the Griha Pravesh Puja are commonly used:
- “Apoorva,” a ritual carried out while entering a newly built home for the first time.
- “Sapoorva” is performed when someone enters the house after travelling from another country.
- “Dwandwah” is performed when someone enters their home after renovations or reconstruction following calamities like a fire, an earthquake or a flood. The Vastu Puja and Vastu Shanti are usually recommended Pujas, among others, for this purpose. Once the puja is completed, the owner can move into their new home.

How to Perform Griha Pravesh Puja (Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi)
One must do a Griha Pravesh Puja when entering a new house, regardless of whether the residence is purchased or rented. Griha Pravesh Puja is performed keeping the Vidhi in mind and to appease the gods. In detail, the accurate way to do Griha Pravesh Puja for moving into a new home is outlined below.
For When You’re Entering Your New Home!
- Choose a day that is auspicious to shift into your new home.
- Gather the Puja-related goods that are needed. Take a look at the Griha Pravesh Puja Samagri List up top.
- Adorn your new home with bandanwar, rangoli, and fresh flowers on the day of Puja. On the exterior of your main gate, mark the Swastik symbol on both sides with roli (kumkum).
- Place the Coconut between 8 mango leaves, then fill the Kalash with Ganga Jal. In addition to mango leaves, you may also use the leaves of the Ashoka Tree.
- Enter your new house with a Mangal Kalash and a Lord Ganesha idol. Be careful to arrive in your new residence during the Shubh Muhurat.
- Make sure you have five auspicious puja items with you when you enter- Rice, milk, jaggery, coconut, and turmeric.
- You must also bring Shri Yantra, Dakshinavarti Shankh, and the Lord Ganesh idol inside your new residence.
- To enter the new home, men should first stride with their right leg and ladies with their left leg.
Placing the Kalash, Puja, and Hawan
- Place the Kalash and the Ganesh idol in the northeastern corner of your house. The Kalash and idol can also be placed in your temple.
- Chant the Ganpati Mantra ‘निर्विघ्नं कुरु मे देव सर्वकार्येषु सर्वदा॥’ when you place the Mangal Kalash and Ganesh Idol.
- Establish the lucky Kalash using a small quantity of rice.
- Perform the Hawan, Vastu, and Ganesh pujas.
Puja for Your New Kitchen
- Make an auspicious swastika mark on your gas stove in your kitchen as per vastu.
- On the first day of your move, place jaggery and green vegetables in your kitchen.
- On the gas stove, boil milk. It is an auspicious tradition that has been discussed in the later part of the blog.
- Prepare any sweet dish and offer it to the Gods first.
- Offer the sweet dish and Dakshina to Pandit Ji.
- Give Puja’s Prasad to your friends, family, and neighbours.
Rituals for Griha Pravesh
Rituals differ according to your sect, family traditions, local customs, etc.
Different cultures and households celebrate and follow rituals differently. Ritual specifics, such as the hymns chanted, etc., may change according to what part of the country you’re from.
The practice might go something like this in certain homes.
- When you are prepared to move into a home, you meet with a Pujari or Pandit to schedule the Griha Pravesh. The Muhurta is being fixed by him using the owner’s horoscope.
- The pujari will provide a list of the necessary things for the puja after the date has been set.
- These could be things like kumkum powder, turmeric, coconut, betel leaves, betel nuts, pumpkin, incense stick, ash gourd, camphor, navadhanya (9 types of grains), lamp oil, milk, sugar, rice grains, kalash (a pot), pieces of cloth, images of your deity, gomutra, lamps, bells, new gas stove, cotton wicks, etc.
- Cleaning the entire home before the ceremony is also a must.
- All the components are put together a couple of hours before the Muhurat on the day when the ceremony will take place, and the Pujari begins the pre-Griha-Pravesh rituals.
- Decorate your house with flowers and rangoli at the entryway.
- According to Hindu rituals, it is believed that one should enter their new house on the first day holding an image or idol of Lord Ganesha. Place the idol at the northeast corner of your home. Light the two lamps and present them before the idol of Lord Ganesh. Offer prasad to the idol, and include sweets, flowers, and fruits. Next to the idol, place a Kalash filled with Gangajal. Ensure that you don’t forget to cover the Kalash with coconut and four mango leaves at the rim of the Kalash.
- Hang a garland of mango leaves at the entrance to ward off evil energy.
- Commence the Griha Pravesh puja ceremony by igniting a fire on the stove in the kitchen.

- Perform the mangal aarti guided by the pandit and light a camphor lamp. As a part of the Griha Pravesh Puja Vidhi, you can either ring a bell or blow a conch. Therefore, you must be sure and obtain the list of Gruhapravesam puja items as requested by the Pandit.
- Once this is done, break the coconut and serve it to the visitors as prasad. Using the mango leaves and liberally sprinkle your entire house with the water from the Kalash.
- Please note that once the Griha Pravesh puja is done, it is considered inauspicious to leave the house unattended, so stay there for at least three days.
