A Revamped Facility with Modern Amenities: The revamp project at Guindy railway station was initiated in December of last year. Under the scheme, both the eastern and western sides of the station will receive upgrades. Some of the key improvements include: – Revamped two-wheeler parking lot – Installation of lifts on the existing foot overbridge – New booking office – Platform resurfacing – Replacement of old roofing sheets – Passenger information display system – Upgraded public announcement system – CCTV cameras for enhanced security – New pedestrian plaza outside the station The new amenities and infrastructure upgrades aim to create a more comfortable and efficient experience for the over 60,000 daily passengers that use the Guindy station.
Positive Feedback from Commuters: Regular users of Guindy station have expressed their anticipation for the completed upgrades. Rajesh, a daily commuter, expressed excitement about the new escalators on the Race Course side, stating, “The new escalators will be very beneficial as many people board trains from the bus stop on that side. It would be even better if a traffic signal or a small pedestrian bridge were installed to allow those getting down at the Guindy bus stop to reach these escalators easily. Currently, commuters have to cross Race Course Road amidst speeding vehicles, making it very challenging during peak hours.” The feedback from commuters emphasizes the need for improved connectivity and safety measures in conjunction with the upgraded amenities at the station.
Larger Scope of the Project: The Guindy railway station redevelopment project is part of a larger initiative by the Southern Railway. The aim is to transform 34 stations across the state, with particular attention given to six suburban stations in Chennai. Additionally, 193 foot overbridges are slated for construction at various stations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation for this extensive project through video conferencing a few months prior to the commencement of work.
