Himachal Pradesh Leads the Way in Green Energy and Sustainable Transportation Push

Himachal Pradesh Harnessing Green Energy Potential and Promoting Sustainable Transport

Mega Solar Park in Spiti:
The Himachal Pradesh government is making significant strides in advancing green energy projects in the state, particularly in the remote regions of Spiti and Una. One of the key initiatives is the development of a Mega Solar Park in Spiti, situated in the Lahaul-Spiti district. With a capacity of 1,000 MW of hybrid solar and wind energy, this project aims to tap into the state’s abundant natural resources while addressing the challenges posed by climate change.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu has been advocating for central support to leverage the potential of the Mega Solar Park, especially through the Green Corridor Transmission project. By establishing this project, the government aims to achieve a seamless flow of renewable energy between the park and the electric grids, reducing transmission losses and promoting the use of clean energy sources.

32 MW Pekhubela Solar Power Project:
Alongside the Mega Solar Park in Spiti, Himachal Pradesh has successfully completed the 32 MW Pekhubela Solar Power Project in the district of Una. This solar power project is expected to generate a staggering 66.1 billion units of electricity annually and contribute to drastic reductions in carbon emissions, estimated at 2,532 tonnes per year. This achievement significantly boosts the state’s green energy portfolio and aligns with its commitment to tackling climate change.

To further enhance the state’s green energy initiatives, the Himachal Pradesh Power Corp Ltd has been entrusted by the government to install 500 MW of solar power across various other projects that are already underway. These projects will not only augment the renewable energy capacity but also create opportunities for employment and economic growth in the region.

Sustainable Transport Transition:
In parallel to the investments in green energy, Himachal Pradesh is also focusing on transforming its transportation sector. The Transport Department has taken the lead by prioritizing the transition from fossil fuel vehicles to electric ones. Notably, the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister now use electric vehicles as well.

The state’s public transportation system, represented by the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), is also adopting greener alternatives. With 110 electric buses and 50 electric taxis currently in operation, the HRTC is actively replacing traditional combustion engine vehicles. To accelerate this transition, an allocation of Rs 3.27 billion has been designated to procure an additional 2,000 Type-II electric buses. This move not only reduces carbon emissions but also enhances air quality and improves the overall sustainability of the transportation network.

Green Corridors and Hydrogen-based Mobility Station:
Himachal Pradesh has set ambitious targets to further enhance its sustainable transport infrastructure. The state is in the process of developing six green corridors, aimed at creating key routes for electric vehicles. These corridors will facilitate seamless travel while encouraging the adoption of electric transportation.

Furthermore, in line with its commitment to environmentally friendly practices, the government has initiated the construction of the state’s first green hydrogen-based mobility station in Chamba. The National Hydropower Corporation (NHPC) is investing Rs 140 million into this project, which is expected to produce 20 kg of green hydrogen on a daily basis. The completion of this station by August 2025 will contribute significantly to sustainable transport and will serve as a model for future ventures in the region.

With the Himachal Pradesh government’s extensive efforts towards harnessing green energy potential and promoting sustainable transportation, the state is making great strides in overcoming climate challenges. These initiatives not only benefit the environment but also pave the way for economic growth, employment opportunities, and improved quality of life for the people of Himachal Pradesh.
