Himachal Pradesh Ventures into Technologically Advanced Pumped Storage Projects

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu recently announced the state government’s decision to explore the domain of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs). These projects are considered to be one of the most reliable solutions for balancing the power supply from renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.

Addressing Power Shortages and Ensuring Grid Stability

During a recent cabinet meeting, the state government approved the allocation of two PSPs. The first project is the 1630 MW Renukaji Pump Storage Project, located in the Sirmaur district, while the second is the 270 MW Thana Plaun Pump Storage Project based in the Beas Basin of Mandi district. Both projects will be developed by the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL).

Chief Minister Sukhu stressed the importance of these projects in ensuring a stable power grid. He highlighted that Himachal Pradesh’s hilly terrain makes it well-suited for Pumped Storage Projects due to the state’s unique geography. These projects aim to address power shortages during peak demand periods by releasing stored water to generate electricity through turbines.

The Working Principle of Pumped Storage Projects

In a Pumped Storage Project system, water is pumped from a lower reservoir to a higher one using low-cost electricity, usually during off-peak hours. Here, Himachal Pradesh can leverage its renewable energy sources by exploiting excess electricity generated during periods of low demand. When the electricity demand increases, the stored water is released back through turbines, generating electricity and maintaining a steady energy supply.

Advancement in Project Implementation

An official statement mentioned that work has already commenced on both projects. The projects will feature two distinct powerhouses, one dedicated to regular power generation and another specifically for the PSP system.

The Renukaji Hydro Power Project will have a capacity of generating 40 MW, while the Thana Plaun Hydro Electric Project is expected to generate 191 MW of power. Both projects will feature separate turbines specially dedicated to the PSP system, ensuring efficient power management.
