Himachal Pradesh Embarks on a Sustainable Transportation Journey
In an effort to promote sustainable transportation and reduce pollution, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu of Himachal Pradesh has made a groundbreaking announcement. During the golden jubilee celebrations of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), Sukhu declared a plan to transition the state-run HRTC to electric buses by March 2025.
The Success and Legacy of HRTC
During the event, the Chief Minister expressed his appreciation for the immense contribution the HRTC has made to the state’s development. From its modest beginnings, the corporation has transformed into a reliable and comfortable travel option for Himachal Pradesh residents, a fact he highlighted with gratuity.
Promoting Employee Welfare
Underscoring the government’s commitment to employee welfare, Sukhu made several significant announcements. It was revealed that salaries for HRTC’s diligent employees and pensions for retirees will be disbursed on October 28, providing financial security and recognition for their dedication. Additionally, a budget of ?500 million will cover overtime dues for 55 months and is slated for distribution by March 31, 2025. Furthermore, pending medical bills totaling ?90 million will be settled within two months.
Driving Sustainability and Financial Health
Chief Minister Sukhu stressed that the transition to an all-electric bus fleet would not only decrease the state’s carbon footprint but would also contribute to the HRTC’s long-term financial soundness. Sukhu emphasized the need for HRTC to strategize for the future, reflecting on previous financial mismanagement that left the corporation in dire straits. This commitment to revive and revitalize the transport sector is at the heart of the present administration.
Thriving Under the Current Administration
Since assuming office, the current administration has implemented various measures to enhance the well-being of HRTC employees. Noteworthy initiatives include the reinstatement of the old pension scheme for approximately 7,300 employees. Furthermore, the regularization of 1,546 contract workers and the creation of 608 new jobs within HRTC demonstrates the government’s dedication to creating opportunities. To ensure continued growth, an additional 550 positions are in the process of being filled, with recently promoting 421 employees.

During the celebrations, Chief Minister Sukhu unveiled HRTC’s coffee table book, showcasing the organization’s remarkable journey. He took the opportunity to acknowledge the unwavering commitment and excellence of officers and employees who have made exceptional contributions. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri further emphasized that HRTC’s strength lies in its dedicated and professional staff who have garnered public trust and boosted occupancy rates.
Charting a Greener Future
HRTC remains a crucial lifeline for the challenging terrain of Himachal Pradesh, with around six lakh passengers depending on its services. Managing such demand is no small feat, and the commitment to sustainable electric buses is an illustration of future goals. Deputy Chief Minister Agnihotri expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister for allocating ?3.27 billion to purchase electric buses. This significant step reflects an investment in greener public transport and paves the way for a sustainable future in Himachal Pradesh.
