History of HOLI

Lord Vishnu- Narasimha

The most popular version of Holi’s origin is that of Lord Vishnu. In the Bhagvat Purana, it is mentioned that the celebration of Holi is related to the destruction of evil. Hiranyakashipu was a King who wanted his son Prahlad to worship him. However, Prahlad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. The tales of the cruelty of Hiranyakashipu were infamous. He made his sister Holika sit with Prahlad on a pyre with a blanket to protect her from the fire. It is said that the blanket flew off from Holika to Prahlad to protect him while the former burned. The king later tried to kill his son but was killed by Narasimha (Lord Vishnu’s fourth avatar). Therefore, the day before Holi is when everyone gathers around a bonfire to celebrate the victory of good over evil and the next day is celebrated as Holi. 

Radha and Krishna

In the puranic works of Sage Garga called the Garga Samhita. In his works, he mentions the reason why Holi is called the Festival of Love. It is said that Krishna was apprehensive about whether Radha would like him because of his dark skin. His mother Yashodha told him to go to Radha and colour his face in any colour Radha wanted. She did just that and thus began the association of Holi with Radha and Krishna. The festival ever since then is celebrated in Braj and Mathura till Rang Panchmi which signifies their love for each other. 

Kamadeva and Rati

The story of Kamadeva and Rati is the reason why Holi falls exactly 40 days after Vasant Panchmi. It is said that Goddess Parvati visited Kamadeva, the God of Love to bring back Lord Shiva. When Kamadeva shot an arrow at Shiva, he opened his eyes and burnt Kamadeva to ashes. Rati, upset because of her loss, meditated for forty days, after which Shiva revived Kamadeva. Kama Jayanti is widely celebrated in the southern states of Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

Holi Celebrations Across India

Celebration of Holi across the country varies from state to state. In Bihar and Jharkhand, Holika Dahan takes place on the day before Holi where people offer cow dung cakes, wood from Redi, Holika and Araad trees and wood chips to the pyre. The next day is celebrated as Holi where everyone applies colour on each other, drinks thandai and bhang, a drink made with cannabis, milk and spice and fried food like pakoras and crisps. In Gujarat, the second day of Holi is called ‘Dhuleti’ and is celebrated with music, dance, colours and theatre. In Maharashtra, ‘Shimga’ is celebrated on the day of Holi Purnima. In the evening a big bonfire is set up. People of the community bring food and desserts to celebrate the festival. In several parts of India like Jammu and Kashmir and Goa Holi is celebrated to welcome the spring season and rabi crops. 

In Uttar Pradesh, the celebration of Holi gets a little intriguing. ‘Lathmar Holi’ is celebrated where, as tradition has it, women get to hit men with lathis or thick sticks while the men protect themselves with a shield. They sing songs to draw the women’s attention. In Barsana, women chase men away with lathis. 

In the southern states of Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu ‘Kama Purnima’ is celebrated by singing folk songs, dancing, ‘Kaumudi’ games and celebrating the marriage of Parvati and Lord Shiva, Kodhai Aandaal and Rangamannar and  Murugan and Deivanai.
