Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) is a consumer goods company and a subsidiary of Unilever, a British company. The company is headquartered in Mumbai, India. The company was founded in 1931 and was incorporated as Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Co., later renamed Hindustan Lever Limited, following a merger of constituent groups in 1956. Later in June 2007, the HUL was renamed Hindustan Unilever Limited, which will continue for years to come.

The history of HUL and an era of marketing branded FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) began in 1888. When tourists to the Kolkata harbour witnessed containers full of Sunlight soap bars, those bars were embossed with the words “Made in England by Lever Brother”.

Following closely, Lifebuoy and other popular brands like Lux, Pears, and Vim were launched in 1895. In 1918, Vanaspati and 1937, the famous Dalda brand, marked their presence in the market. 

Unilever established its first Indian subsidiary Hindustan Vanaspati Manufacturing Company, in 1931, followed by Lever Brother India Limited in 1933 and United Traders Limited in 1935. When these three companies combined, they formed HUL in November 1956. The company offered 10% of its equity to the Indian public and became the first foreign subsidiary company to do so.
