Husk Power Systems and Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc Join Forces for Solar-Powered Mini-grid in Nigeria

In an exciting development for clean energy solutions, Husk Power Systems has partnered with Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC) to implement a solar-powered interconnected minigrid (IMG) in the Duduguru community of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. This innovative project, situated in the Obi Local Government Area, is expected to benefit approximately 1,000 customers and provide a reliable power supply of 656 kW on a daily basis.

Revolutionizing Energy Access in Nigeria

Husk Power Systems, a renowned renewable energy service company (RESCO), has already established over 40 isolated minigrids within Nigeria. Now, with this new partnership, the company seeks to expand its efforts by developing over 50 IMGs in 10 states across Nigeria. The collaboration with AEDC is a crucial step in scaling the RESCO model not only for Nigeria but also for the wider Sub-Saharan region.

The agreement signing ceremony was attended by esteemed individuals including Chijioke Okwuonkenye, the Acting Managing Director and CEO of AEDC, Olu Aruike, the Nigeria Country Director of Husk Power, and Prince Bulus Iwala, Chief of Duduguru. Their presence highlights the importance and significance of this project for the community.

Powering Homes and Businesses

The prospective solar-powered minigrid will be designed to cater to the energy needs of both residential households and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). Approximately 80% of the households in the Duduguru community will have access to the minigrid, which will serve as a stable and dependable source of energy for their day-to-day activities. Simultaneously, the remaining 20% will be able to power their businesses with this clean energy solution, stimulating economic growth and supporting entrepreneurship in the area.

By leveraging the existing transmission and distribution infrastructure of AEDC, the implementation process will be streamlined, ensuring efficient operations of the minigrid. Moreover, Husk Power Systems will take charge of handling tasks such as operations, maintenance, and billing, bringing their expertise in renewable energy management to contribute towards a seamless experience.

Advancing Sustainable Development and Environmental Stewardship

One of the primary objectives of this initiative is to transition the Duduguru community from diesel-powered generators to clean and sustainable solar energy. This shift is not only intended to strengthen the local energy supply but also to minimize adverse environmental impacts. By reducing carbon emissions and decreasing dependence on fossil fuel-powered alternatives, the IMG will take significant strides toward achieving a sustainable and greener future.

Prince Bulus Iwala, the local Chief of Duduguru, expressed his optimism regarding the project’s potential to unlock substantial development opportunities for his community.
