India is making significant strides in its urban infrastructure development, with plans to have the world’s second-largest urban metro network within the next two years. This effort is part of the government’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and creating sustainable living spaces. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri made this announcement, highlighting the various metro rail projects currently under construction in cities like Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Nagpur, and Ahmedabad.
Transforming Urban Landscapes for Livability and Sustainability: Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, there has been a significant increase in investment in the urban sector. While investment in the urban infrastructure amounted to Rs 1.78 lakh crore during 2004-2014, it has soared to Rs 18.07 lakh crore from 2014 onwards. This increased investment reflects the government’s dedication to transforming urban landscapes across the country and making cities more livable and sustainable.
Success of Urban Development Missions: One of the highlights of urban development in India is the success of initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban and the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban. The Swachh Bharat Mission Urban has achieved a significant milestone by providing 100% access to household and community toilets. On the other hand, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban has sanctioned over 1.19 crore houses, with more than 76 lakh already delivered to beneficiaries. These missions have not only improved living conditions but have also empowered women by granting them house titles in their names.
Introducing the National Common Mobility Card: In line with the vision of creating world-class urban spaces, the government has introduced the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). This card enables seamless travel across different modes of transport, making commuting more convenient for residents. The NCMC is another testament to the government’s commitment to improving urban mobility and enhancing the ease of living for all. India’s significant expansion of its urban metro network and ongoing commitment to urban development initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership are positive steps toward creating sustainable and livable cities. With increased investment and innovative measures like the NCMC, India is paving the way for a better urban future.
