India fortifies coal reserves, boosts energy security.

In a significant development for India’s energy sector, the country’s domestic coal-based Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) have bolstered their coal reserves. According to the Ministry of Coal, coal stocks have reached a remarkable 44.46 million tonnes, representing a substantial 33% increase from the previous year. This increase in coal reserves will significantly contribute to bolstering energy security amidst seasonal challenges.

Robust Start to the Fiscal Year:  The first quarter of the fiscal year witnessed commendable growth in coal production, with a 10.58% increase reported. Additionally, coal supply improved by 8.50%, further highlighting the robust start to the year. This growth in production and supply indicates the government’s commitment to meet the rising energy demand in the country.

Proactive Measures for Monsoon Season:  Aware of the impact of the monsoon on coal production, the Ministry of Coal has taken proactive measures to secure a stockpile of 98.67 million tonnes at mine pitheads. This strategic move represents a significant 33.5% increase compared to the same period last year. With the monsoon season approaching, these measures will help ensure uninterrupted coal supply to meet the energy demands of the nation.

Increasing Fulfillment of Normative Requirement:  Currently, the coal stock at Thermal Power Plants fulfills around 68% of the normative requirement. This marks a significant rise from the 50% recorded at the same time last year. This increased fulfillment of the normative requirement is a testament to the ministry’s efforts to maintain sufficient coal reserves for the smooth functioning of power plants.

Sustained coal stock levels for Fiscal Year 23-24: In the previous fiscal year 23-24, there were no reports of coal shortage at the Thermal Power Plants. By the end of March 2024, coal stocks stood at a substantial 47 million tonnes. The ministry aims to sustain similar coal stock levels in the current fiscal year, both at Thermal Power Plants and mine pitheads, to ensure uninterrupted power supply.

Ensuring Consistent Coal Supplies:  To mitigate the challenges brought by the monsoon season, there has been an impressive increase of 10.54% in the availability of rakes/days as compared to the previous year. This increase ensures a consistent supply of coal during the challenging monsoon season, as the ministries of coal, railways, and power work together to maintain uninterrupted coal availability for domestic TPPs.

India’s Commitment to Energy Stability:  These proactive measures by the Ministry of Coal highlight India’s commitment to safeguarding energy stability amidst seasonal fluctuations. With the steady increase in coal reserves and consistent coal supplies, the country aims to ensure continuous power supply across its Thermal Power Plants.
