India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Unveils Plans for Integrated Transport Hubs Nationwide
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in India has announced an ambitious plan to construct integrated transport hubs across the country. This move aims to centralize and optimize transportation systems, bringing together roadways, railways, airways, waterways, and ropeways into a single location. By doing so, the government aims to improve passenger convenience and enhance the overall travel experience.
Pilot Projects in Katra, Tirupati, Varanasi, and Nagpur
To kickstart this endeavor, pilot projects will be initiated in four cities: Katra, Tirupati, Varanasi, and Nagpur. These hubs will be managed by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLM), a fully-owned subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The government envisions these terminals to be one-stop solutions, integrating and interconnecting different modes of transportation.
Benefits and Challenges
The integration and development of public transport and terminal infrastructure bring about numerous socio-economic benefits. According to an Economic Times report, enhancing passenger experiences, reducing urban congestion, and stimulating economic activity by creating new city centers are among the notable advantages. Currently, 87% of passenger traffic relies on India’s road networks, highlighting the need for such initiatives to improve efficiency.
However, the fragmented nature of existing transportation systems poses challenges for passengers. Navigating between state-run buses, metros, rickshaws, and congested city roads can be a daunting experience. The envisioned integrated terminals aim to address these challenges by providing seamless connectivity and making transfers between different forms of transport more efficient and user-friendly.
The PM Gatishakti National Master Plan (NMP) and National Logistics Policy (NLP)
A significant milestone towards achieving the integrated transport hubs plan was the launch of the PM Gatishakti National Master Plan (NMP) in 2021. This initiative focuses on upgrading multimodal connectivity infrastructure across various economic zones in the country. By utilizing a unified digital platform, the NMP brings together major transport projects such as Bharatmala, Sagarmala, and UDAN, streamlining their planning and execution.
Complementing the NMP is the National Logistics Policy (NLP), which addresses the development of integrated infrastructure within the logistics sector. The NLP ensures efficiency in services, including processes and regulatory frameworks, to optimize overall logistics operations in the country. Supported by the comprehensive logistics action plan (CLAP), this policy outlines specific steps for enhancing logistics operations across the nation.
