India unveils ambitious plan for renewable energy expansion, becoming global clean energy leader

India Launches National Electricity Plan Transmission

India has recently launched its ambitious National Electricity Plan Transmission, with the goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and over 600 GW by 2032. The plan, prepared by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), lays out a comprehensive roadmap for expanding the country’s transmission network to integrate large-scale renewable energy.

Achieving Sustainability and Meeting Growing Demand

One of the key objectives of the National Electricity Plan Transmission is to cater to the rising power demand projected to reach 388 GW by 2031-32. To meet this growing demand while transitioning to a greener energy mix, the plan outlines the addition of over 1,91,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines and 1,270 GVA of transformation capacity.

Energy storage is slated to play a pivotal role in managing the intermittency of renewable energy sources. The plan includes provisions for 47 GW of battery storage and 31 GW of pumped storage to effectively store and utilize the generated renewable energy.

Power Delivery to Green Hydrogen and Industrial Hubs

Recognizing the potential of green hydrogen and renewable energy-powered industrial hubs, the National Electricity Plan Transmission emphasizes facilitating power delivery to these important sectors. Given India’s vast coastline, the plan envisions powering green hydrogen and industrial hubs located along the coast. This strategic move will further drive the country’s commitment to sustainable development.

Boosting Inter-Regional Transmission and Investment Opportunities

To strengthen the transmission network and enable seamless power flow across regions, the plan aims to increase inter-regional transmission capacity to 168 GW by 2032. This bolstered grid infrastructure will not only support the integration of renewable energy but also enhance overall grid efficiency.

In addition to these infrastructure upgrades, the National Electricity Plan Transmission brings forth exciting investment opportunities. With an estimated investment of ?9.15 lakh crore by 2032, the plan is set to attract high levels of investment. These investments will not only fuel the renewable energy sector but also promote cutting-edge technologies that enhance grid efficiency.

India Leading the Way in Clean Energy

India’s National Electricity Plan Transmission strategically positions the country as a global leader in the clean energy transition. With a focus on cross-border interconnections and an emphasis on regional energy cooperation, India is laying the foundation for a more resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem.

By aligning its energy goals with international best practices and embracing innovative technologies, India is sending a strong message about its commitment to combating climate change and achieving a cleaner future.

The launch of the National Electricity Plan Transmission is a significant milestone in India’s energy landscape, signalling a renewed determination to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and spearhead sustainable growth.
