Indian Railways Aims for ‘Green Revolution’ in Northeast

Indian Railways Aims to Become World’s Largest “Green Railways”

In a significant move towards sustainability, Indian Railways has set a target to become the world’s largest “Green Railways” with 100% electrification and zero carbon emissions. As part of this ambitious vision, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has been making remarkable progress in electrifying its remaining Broad-Gauge routes. Touted as a frontrunner in this movement, the NFR has reportedly electrified 64% of its total network.

Electrification Progress in Northeast India

According to Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of the NFR, a total of 2,070.52 Route Kilometers (RKM) have already been electrified within the NFR, which encompasses a vast network of 4,260.52 RKMs. Among the states in the northeastern region, Assam has witnessed the greatest progress, with 1,353.23 RKMs electrified so far. Tripura follows closely behind with electrification covering 151.59 RKMs. Smaller sections in Manipur, Meghalaya, and Nagaland have also witnessed commendable developments.

Role of Various Agencies in Electrification

To expedite the electrification process, Indian Railways has collaborated with leading organizations like IRCON India, RITES, and NFR Construction. These entities are actively engaging in the electrification work and are expected to enhance the speed and frequency of train services. Furthermore, this transition to electric power will make railway transportation in the northeast region more sustainable and efficient.

Benefits of Electric Railways

The switch to electric power not only contributes to reducing carbon emissions but also reduces the reliance on crude oil imports. By eliminating the need for locomotives powered by diesel or other fossil fuels, the electrified railway tracks are set to lower air pollution levels and contribute towards India’s commitment to combat climate change. Moreover, the punctuality and overall flow of rail traffic are expected to improve as traction changes causing delays become minimized.

Future Prospects and Implications

Indian Railways’ “Green Railways” initiative marks a revolutionary step towards sustainable transportation. The overall electrification of the Northeast Frontier Railway plays a vital role in ensuring a greener and cleaner future for the region. As more sections get electrified, the benefits will not only become apparent in terms of reduced pollution and improved train services but also in driving economic growth in the northeastern states.

In conclusion, Indian Railways’ approach to become the world’s largest “Green Railways” is commendable. The electrification of routes in the Northeast Frontier Railway, along with the active involvement of key organizations, highlights the commitment towards sustainability. As the electrification efforts continue to progress, the benefits for both the environment and the people of the region are set to multiply, solidifying India’s position as a leader in green transportation.
