Indian Shipyard Expands Tug Construction

Udupi Cochin Shipyard UCSL, a prestigious subsidiary of Cochin Shipyard CSL, has recently secured a significant order for the construction of new tugboats. Under the contract, the shipyard will build three ASD (Azimuth Stern Drive) tugs with a powerful bollard pull capability of 70 tonnes. This contract was awarded by Ocean Sparkle, one of India’s prominent tug operators, operating under Adani Harbour Services.

Continuing Success: It is worth noting that this is not the first collaboration between Udupi Cochin Shipyard UCSL and Ocean Sparkle. In a previous agreement, UCSL had successfully constructed two ASD tugboats with a bollard pull power of 62 tonnes for Ocean Sparkle. These tugs were delivered ahead of the contractual deadlines and have been efficiently utilized by Ocean Sparkle at Paradeep Port and New Mangalore Port.

Enhanced Features and Specifications: The new tugs being constructed will boast impressive features and specifications aiming to meet the industry’s demands. Each tug is expected to have a length of 33 meters, a beam of 12.2 meters, and a draft of 4.2 meters. With two main engines generating 1838 kW of power, these tugs will pack a punch. Additionally, thrusters with a diameter of 2.7 meters will enable superior maneuverability. The inclusion of 150 kW diesel generators ensures power backup, guaranteeing optimal performance. The tugs will be equipped with various essential elements, including a forward towing winch, an aft winch, a 3-tonne deck crane, and an external firefighting system (FIFI-1) with an impressive cubic meter per hour capacity of 2800.

Strengthening the Bond: The contract signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Harikumar A, the CEO of UCSL, and Mr. Hiren Shah, the MD and CEO of Ocean Sparkle. Their presence further emphasized the importance and the value of this collaboration.

A Boost to Shipbuilding Industry: The construction of these new tugs not only builds upon the past success achieved by Udupi Cochin Shipyard UCSL but also represents a significant advancement in the Indian shipbuilding industry. As a subsidiary of the esteemed Cochin Shipyard CSL, UCSL has demonstrated its expertise and capability to successfully deliver innovative and high-quality vessels. This creates a positive impact, both in terms of advancement in shipbuilding technology and the growth of the Indian maritime sector.

Looking Towards the Future: With the signing of this contract, Udupi Cochin Shipyard UCSL and Ocean Sparkle have displayed their commitment to excellence and their shared vision for the development of the maritime industry in India. It is anticipated that this collaboration will propel both companies to greater heights in terms of technological advancements and organizational success. As construction begins on the new tugs, the industry eagerly anticipates witnessing their performance in action and the positive impact they will have on the Indian maritime landscape.
