BEML Flags Off New Driverless MRS-1 Metro Trainset, Achieves Milestone
Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth announced today the flagging off of a new driverless MRS-1 Metro trainset at BEML’s Bangalore plant, marking another significant achievement for BEML’s Rail business division.
Bangalore Plant Marks the Completion of 55 Metro Trainsets
The newly flagged off trainset is the 55th one being supplied to the Mumbai Metro Rail Metropolitan Authority. These trainsets will be used for operation on Line 2 and Line 7 of the Mumbai Metro. The Minister highlighted that BEML secured this order amidst stiff global competition, emphasizing its expertise in the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, and training of 6-car trainsets of standard gauge Metro cars.
Indigenous Development Essential for Urban Mobility
During the ceremony, Minister Sanjay Seth emphasized the significance of indigenously developed metro rail systems in enhancing urban mobility. He praised BEML for its contribution to the “Make in India” initiative, highlighting that the driverless metro trainset represents the nation’s growing capabilities in manufacturing advanced transportation solutions.

CMD of BEML, Mr. Shantanu Roy, expressed his appreciation for the Ministry’s continued support and restated BEML’s commitment to delivering quality products. He conveyed the company’s immense pride in contributing to the nation’s infrastructure development, emphasizing their dedication to excellence and innovation in all their endeavors.
Mr. Roy further announced that BEML is the first Indian rolling stock manufacturer to design, develop, manufacture, and supply driverless trains. The company is proud to supply these state-of-the-art driverless trains to the prestigious Mumbai Metro Line 2 and Line 7. Throughout the design process, BEML took great care to ensure that the Metro train is optimized for maximum passenger comfort, safety, and energy efficiency, meeting stringent global standards.
