India’s First Ship Shore Electric Power Initiative Set to Eliminate Diesel Usage

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has announced its plan to invest nearly Rs 1 billion in India’s first pilot project for shore electric power supply. This project aims to eliminate the use of diesel engines used to power ships at berth, providing a cleaner energy alternative. JNPA chairperson Unmesh Wagh revealed that the pilot project will be executed at the third container terminal of Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Maharashtra.

India’s First of its Kind: This initiative by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority will make it the first project of its kind in India. The aim is to provide shore electric power supply to ships on a pilot basis. This significant step recognizes the need for sustainable energy solutions in the maritime industry.

A Potential Game Changer: Currently, ships at berth rely on diesel engines to generate the electricity required for essential services like hoteling, unloading, and loading activities. However, with this new shore electric power supply project, ships will be able to access cleaner energy sources. For instance, a mid-sized tanker alone requires up to 12 MwH of electricity, which is primarily generated through diesel engines. This becomes an integral step in reducing environmental impact.

Partnerships and Commencement: Gateway Terminals India, a joint venture between APM Terminals and the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), operates the third container terminal of Jawaharlal Nehru Port. To move forward with this initiative, the port authority will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with all stakeholders on July 11. This collaboration will ensure a seamless implementation.

Birds-Eye view of Progress: JNPA Chairperson Unmesh Wagh highlighted that this new facility will make it possible for two ships to be powered simultaneously without depending on diesel engines. Taking inspiration from using shore electric power for tugs when berthed, this project is set to optimize operations for a more sustainable and eco-friendly approach.

A Cleaner Horizon Ahead: As the world focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transiting to cleaner energy sources, the launch of India’s first shore electric power supply project at Jawaharlal Nehru Port sets an exemplary standard for the maritime industry. The reduction in the use of diesel engines will help contribute towards a cleaner and more sustainable future. This project is likely to serve as a stepping stone for other ports across the country to adopt similar practices and reduce their environmental impact.
