So far, there was no particular requirement for newborns and infants to possess any passport as they were simply tagged along with their guardians/parents. However, things have changed recently as new law also gives regulations for infants to have their own passports.

How to Apply for a Passport for an Infant/Newborn?
One can proceed with an online and offline process to apply for a newborn passport. The pre-requisite is that the parents or guardians must be registered with the Passport Seva Kendra portal.
Online Process
- Go to the official website of Passport India.
- One needs to create an account by registering with their basic details like mobile number and email ID. There will be an email and mobile number authentication step after this.
- Once the registration is complete, log in with the given credentials.
- You can proceed to the online application process thereon.
- Fill in the application with the correct details and make the payment online.
- You can choose your mode of payment which can be a debit or credit card transaction or a UPI transfer.
- The officials will review the application, and due communication will be sent to the registered mobile number.
Offline Process
- For the offline application process, start by downloading the application form online from Passport Seva Kendra.
- You will be required to log in to your account.
- The application can be downloaded in XML format.
- Or straight away you can also go to the nearest passport office, wherein the agent will hand over a request form for Infant Passport.
- Provide the necessary information in the passport application form
- The application fees can be paid directly to the agents therein.

Documents Required for a Newborn Baby
The applicant must produce the following documents to conclude the application process for an infant passport.
- Child’s birth certificate
- In case the parent does not produce the address proof, the child mandatorily needs their residential address proof.
- There are Annexure H forms are available from the Passport Seva Kendra portal. This form is required to be filled out and signed.
- Photographs of the child in passport-size format
- Slip with the appointment details
Fee Structure for an Infant Passport
Newborn passports can be availed for a nominal fee of INR 1000. In the case of a tatkal passport for infants, the fee will be applicable INR 2000. These are the standard charges applicable for anyone below the age of 18. If there is a request for replacement of the passport in view of lost or damaged documents, the consumer will be required to pay a charge of INR 3,000, and for a tatkal passport for infants, there will be a charge of INR 2000.

Generally, the processing time for an Infant passport application takes about a week. However, there are certainly other factors that can affect the processing time as well, including holidays, work load, etc.
