Lucknow- Kanpur Expressway: An In-Depth Overview

About Lucknow- Kanpur Expressway

The Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway, sometimes referred to as National Expressway 6 (NE-6), was designated a national highway in December 2020. By 2024, it’s expected to be up and running. The Ganga Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, and Purvanchal Expressway are all components of the enormous development programmes launched by the UP government, as is this project.

The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has authorised spending a total of Rs 1,935 crore for the building of the motorway. According to the NHAI (National Highway Authority of India), work on the motorway began in January 2022. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) was developed by Egis India Consulting Engineers Pvt. Ltd. for this hybrid brownfield-upgrade and greenfield project.

After the foundation stone for the motorway was laid in March 2019, the highway was formally named National Expressway 6 in the Indian Gazette in December 2020. (again on January 5, 2022). It is anticipated that the expressway’s construction will be finished and functioning in 2024.

Current Status

Land acquisition for the project is now underway. In March 2022, PNC Infratech received two contracts for their construction work. The Kanpur–Lucknow Expressway is anticipated to be finished and operational in June 2025, well ahead of schedule for December 2025.

Lucknow- Kanpur Expressway Route

The Lucknow Kanpur Expressway shall drastically shorten the distance between the two cities’ travel times, which will drop from 1.5 to 3 hours to roughly 45 to 50 minutes. Road travel from Lucknow to Kanpur is 93 km, and air travel is 77 km. Currently, travellers can travel from Lucknow to Kanpur by plane, train, and road.

Along the way from Kanpur to Lucknow, additional significant towns are Nawabganj and Banthara. Kanpur is located approximately 91 kilometres from Nawabganj, and 71 km from Banthra via NH 27.
