Kanpur Metro Phase 1 Achieves Major Construction Milestone

The Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project has reached a significant milestone with the successful installation of two 30-meter-long steel composite box girders across the Naubasta Flyover in corridor 1. As part of Package KNPCC-07, these steel girders were erected six meters above the flyover’s deck, which spans national highways 19 and 27 (NH-19 and NH-27). This accomplishment marks a major breakthrough for the ongoing construction of the Kanpur Metro.

Enhancing Connectivity in Kanpur: The Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project aims to improve connectivity in Kanpur by establishing a modern metro network. The current corridor 1 runs 23.785 kilometers from Kanpur to Naubasta, and the installation of the steel girders was conducted at a vital location between the Kidwai Nagar and Vasant Vihar stations. This section of the project will comprise a 5.27-kilometer viaduct, enhancing transportation options for the residents of Kanpur.

Progression in Construction Techniques: Previously, Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL) had successfully launched 25 and 28-meter-long U-girders for the construction of the viaduct. However, due to the extensive breadth of the Naubasta Flyover, longer and stronger steel girders were required for this section. The successful erection of the two 30-meter-long steel composite box girders demonstrates the advancements in construction techniques employed by KPIL.

Awarded Civil Contract by UPMRC: KPIL was entrusted with the Rs. 5.14 billion KNPCC-07 civil contract by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in June 2022. Under this agreement, KPIL is responsible for the construction of five elevated stations, namely, Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Baudh Nagar, and Naubasta. These stations will play a crucial role in facilitating smooth and efficient metro operations in Kanpur.

The Vision of Kanpur Metro: The Central Government Cabinet gave its approval for the 32.385 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project in February 2019. Subsequently, on March 8, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the project’s cornerstone. This ambitious endeavor aims to revolutionize public transport in Kanpur and cater to the increasing commuting needs of the city’s residents. The phased development of the metro network will bring transformative benefits to the region’s transportation infrastructure.

Current Operational Section and Future Plans: At present, the priority section of the Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project is operational and spans 8.7 kilometers between Moti Jheel and IIT Kanpur. This segment has already started providing a convenient and reliable mode of transportation for thousands of commuters. The planned completion date for the entire Phase 1 is December 2024, when the remaining sections will be concluded, including those where the steel girders have been installed near Naubasta Flyover.

Bright Future Ahead: The successful installation of the steel girders across the Naubasta Flyover showcases the remarkable progress of the Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project. As it continues to expand, the metro network in Kanpur will enhance connectivity, alleviate traffic congestion, and boost economic growth. With its improved infrastructure and efficient transportation system, Kanpur is poised to become a world-class city that seamlessly integrates modern urban amenities, benefiting both its residents and the overall development of the region.
