Kolkata Metro Installs Solar Power Plants to Harness Renewable Energy
Kolkata Metro has taken a giant leap towards embracing clean and renewable energy by installing solar power plants at several stations. In line with its commitment to sustainability, the metro authority announced on Tuesday that it has successfully completed the installation of solar plants across various lines. This initiative aims to not only reduce carbon emissions but also strengthen the city’s resilience to power outages.
Blue Line Stations Go Solar
As part of this eco-friendly venture, Kolkata Metro has installed solar power plants with a cumulative capacity of 763 kWp at the following Blue Line stations – Noapara, Dum Dum, Mahanayak Uttam Kumar, Kavi Subhash, and Bellevue. Additionally, the metro authority has also installed solar panels at Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital. These solar power plants promise to generate a substantial amount of energy while offsetting provisions from traditional fossil fuel sources.
East-West Corridor Leads the Charge
Taking the commitment further, the East-West Corridor has been equipped with solar power plants having a capacity of 1,519 kWp. This innovative approach has led to installations at key stations like Salt Lake Sector V, Central Park, and the Central Park Depot. By incorporating solar energy into its operations, Kolkata Metro is economically saving on electricity costs while minimizing its reliance on the conventional power grid.
Purple and Orange Lines Demonstrate Sustainability
The Purple Line of the Kolkata Metro now boasts a 1,400 kWp solar power plant at the Joka carshed. Simultaneously, the Orange Line has taken a significant step towards sustainability by incorporating a 500 kWp solar power plant at the new carshed in Kavi Subhash. These installations not only showcase the progressive thinking of the metro authorities but also emphasize the need for adopting alternative energy sources in the transportation sector.
Public-Private Partnership for a Greener Kolkata
The installation of these solar power plants has been implemented through a public-private partnership, showcasing the determination of Kolkata Metro to pool together resources for a brighter and greener future. This enterprise signifies the collective effort of the government and private entities to work towards sustainable development.
With this new initiative, Kolkata Metro has achieved an impressive 4,197 kWp of installed solar power capacity. Moreover, an additional 360 kWp of solar panels are being set up on the roofs of buildings at Belgachia and Tollygunge. These panels are expected to start generating electricity by the end of the month, making these stations self-sufficient in terms of running on clean energy.
By prominently incorporating solar energy into its infrastructure, Kolkata Metro is leading the way for other transportation systems across the country to follow suit.
