The KMC (Kolkata Municipal Corporation) will be offering a special reward for housing complexes which possess waste recycling and segregation systems in the form of tax exemptions. According to the member, mayor-in-council supervising the solid waste management department of the KMC, Debabrata Majumdar, management of the growing waste of the city has already become a major issue since the sole dumping ground at Dhapa is already overburdened.
The alternative mechanism of lowering the burden placed on Dhapa through installing system for conversion of garbage to fertilizers at this site has not been able to fix this problem. This is because owners of the huge compost plant make use of just 75 tonnes of garbage in comparison to the previously agreed volume of 500 tonnes as per the agreement signed between this private firm and the KMC. Majumdar also stated that this move will encourage the owners of apartments and complexes to set up the small composting machine within their premises for conversion of waste into wealth through preliminary segregation.
Property tax exemptions will be given to housing complexes choosing this model according to him. Majumdar talked of how residents of housing complexes can consider using biodegradable wastes like fruits or vegetables for production of manure while non-bio-degradable wastes like papers and plastics can be shifted to factories for recycling purposes.
According to the President at CREDAI Bengal, Nandu Belani, the real estate body would offer total support for the Kolkata Municipal Corporation with regard to this novel initiative and would encourage the development of highly effective waste management systems across housing complexes in Kolkata.
