Kolkata’s South-Bound EM Bypass to Get New Iron Bridge by December, Easing Traffic Woes.

Construction of an iron bridge spanning across the Moila khal canal in the south-bound stretch of EM Bypass near Metropolitan’s Orange Line Metro station has been underway for over a year. This long-awaited infrastructure upgrade aims to ease traffic congestion in one of the busiest sections of Kolkata. The project, overseen by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), is expected to be completed by December.

Iron Bridge Signifies Enhanced Durability and Efficiency
The new iron bridge boasts impressive specifications, with a span of 55m x 6m. It consists of a 4.5m carriageway for vehicular traffic and a 1.5m cantilever pedestrian walkway, ensuring smooth passage for all commuters. RVNL’s decision to build a 240-tonne bridge using steel and concrete girders proves to be a considerable improvement over the initially proposed Bailey bridge, which would have been significantly lighter in comparison.

The design prioritizes longevity and strength, accommodating the passage of four rows of cars alongside enough space for two-wheelers. Without obstructing vehicular traffic, the cantilever pedestrian walkway tackles the challenge of harmonizing foot and vehicle movement.

Addressing Traffic Bottlenecks in a Busy Corridor
The narrowing of the EM Bypass near the Orange Line Metro station has caused grave inconveniences for approximately 8.8 lakh vehicles that use the route daily. The six-lane setup on the north-bound flank was implemented in contrast, highlighting the urgency of widening the south-bound stretch. With the Metro construction activities contributing to the existing traffic snarls, Kolkata Police and RVNL collaborated to devise a practical solution that would enhance traffic flow and reduce delays.

The initiation of this expansion project has been well-received, as constricted road space caused by Metro piers 284 and 285 accentuated the need for an efficient remedy. Through the joint efforts of RVNL and Kolkata Police, the construction of the iron bridge commenced in August last year.

Long-Term Solution for Better Traffic Management
RVNL’s decision to prioritize durability and strength, eschewing the lighter Bailey bridge proposal, signifies their commitment to providing a long-term solution to traffic bottlenecks. The recently started deck slab casting along with the application of a bituminous coat are the next stages in the completion of this project.

Upon the finalization of the expansion, the updated stretch of the EM Bypass is expected to considerably alleviate congestion and ensure smoother, faster transportation throughout Kolkata. Consequently, the enhanced infrastructure promises to support the growing demands of the city’s residents and bolster its robust urban infrastructure.
