Ministry focuses on improving hilly infrastructure.

Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Launches Extensive Infrastructure Projects in Manipur

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has taken a significant step towards improving infrastructure in Manipur by approving 50 National Highway projects in the state. These projects will cover a total distance of 1,026 kilometers, with a strong emphasis on the hilly areas of Manipur.

Development in Challenging Terrains

Out of the 50 approved projects, 44 will be specifically dedicated to areas with difficult terrains, spanning a distance of 902 kilometers. This decision reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure in regions that face unique challenges due to hilly topography.

It is worth noting that eight projects covering a length of 125 kilometers have already been completed, showcasing the progress achieved thus far. At present, 36 more projects are in various stages of development, with a budget of Rs 120 billion allocated to completing the remaining 777 kilometers.

Aim for Better Development and Connectivity

The extensive efforts made by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aim to achieve multiple objectives. Enhancing connectivity within the state, boosting economic growth, and improving living standards for the residents of Manipur are at the forefront of this initiative.

The government’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure development is evident in the two additional highway projects worth Rs 13.5 billion approved by the Ministry for the 2024-25 Annual Plan. These projects will address the infrastructure needs of hilly regions, further reinforcing the focus placed on balanced and comprehensive development.

Priority on State Roads Improvements

Alongside the National Highway projects, the Ministry is also prioritizing the improvement of state roads through the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). With 111 proposed works on the table, the Ministry has approved 57 projects based on priority.

This responsive approach to state-level infrastructure requirements demonstrates the Ministry’s dedication to addressing the specific needs of Manipur. By streamlining the project approval process, the government ensures that infrastructure development takes place where it is needed most.

Ensuring Sustainable Infrastructure Growth

One notable aspect of the Ministry’s approach is the commitment to balancing development efforts with regulatory compliance. Maintaining a balance between progress and environmental considerations is essential for sustainable infrastructure growth.

To this end, the Balance of Supply (BoS) ratio for the approved projects in Manipur stands at 9.81, surpassing the permissible limit of 4 for hilly states. This adjustment highlights the Ministry’s dedication to promoting responsible development practices and ensuring environmental sustainability in infrastructure projects.

Proactive Approach Towards Economic Opportunities

These extensive initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways send a strong message about the government’s proactive approach to enhancing Manipur’s road infrastructure. By focusing on remote and challenging regions, the government aims to expand economic opportunities, improve connectivity, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.

The approval of 50 National Highway projects, leveraging a combination of budget allocation and regulatory adherence, demonstrates the government’s commitment to efficiently addressing infrastructure challenges. The resulting improvements in Manipur’s road network will undoubtedly play a crucial role in fostering economic growth and connectivity within the state.
