Prime Minister Inaugurates New Airports Under UDAN Scheme
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated new airports in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, and Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. These airports have been developed under the regional connectivity UDAN scheme, which aims to enhance air connectivity to smaller towns and promote economic growth and regional development.
Government Support and Incentives
The Indian government is fully supporting the aviation sector by providing incentives for UDAN airport projects and maintenance services. Under the scheme, airport projects will enjoy 100% tax exemptions for a decade, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul service providers will receive full customs duty exemptions.
Industry leaders such as Rahul Bhatia, the Managing Director of InterGlobe Aviation and IndiGo, have applauded the government’s efforts in rapidly developing airports. Bhatia highlighted that these developments will provide great opportunities for growth in the aviation sector. Vinay Dube, CEO of Akasa Air, also expressed optimism about the future profitability of airlines, foreseeing a prosperous decade ahead. Jaideep Mirchandani, Chairman of Sky One, emphasized that air travel has become more accessible to a wider range of people, especially with the expanded services in smaller cities.
Rising Demand for Air Travel in India
The aviation sector in India is experiencing a rise in demand for air travel, and the UDAN scheme is playing a significant role in meeting this demand. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), projections predict the need for over 2,200 aircraft by 2042 to cater to growing passenger requirements. The introduction of new airports is expected to enhance regional accessibility and bring more economic opportunities to various parts of the country.
The Northeast region of India is also witnessing significant airport development, with over 30 projects currently underway. Joshua Ng, Director at Alton Aviation Consultancy, praised India’s progress in the aviation industry, stating that the country is headed in the right direction for success.
Since its first flight from Shimla to Delhi on April 27, 2017, the UDAN scheme has served more than 14 million passengers across 600 routes, according to the aviation officials. The scheme has brought various types of aircraft, from larger planes like Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 to smaller planes and helicopters, strengthening air connectivity to smaller towns and cities.
Boosting Connectivity and Regional Growth
The inauguration of these new airports is a significant step towards achieving the goals of the UDAN scheme. With increased connectivity, smaller towns and regions can now benefit from enhanced economic growth and development. The airports will facilitate subsidized regional flights, making travel more affordable and accessible for everyone.
Overall, the development of new airports under the UDAN scheme marks another milestone in the government’s efforts to enhance air connectivity and promote regional growth. With the continuing support and positive response from industry leaders, it is evident that India’s aviation sector is set for a bright future.
