Mumbai AI Artist Re-Imagines Housing Designs

AI is turning the wildest of human imaginations into a reality. Artists and architects have been digitally materialising their visions of future housing solutions using AI tools. Prateek Arora, a popular digital creator from Mumbai, recently shared AI-generated house designs on his Instagram page. Prateek’s renders feature futuristic homes suspended mid-air, like UFOs,  taking Mumbai’s skyline a notch higher. The images, created using the AI tool ‘Midjourney’, were shared by the creator on the 13th of September.

Dream Homes, Literally!

The striking feature of Arora’s designs is the spacecraft-like appearance of the houses. Although they initially give an impression of mere fantastical concepts, closer looks also reveal meticulously planned architectural details. The models are certainly futuristic, but the artist ensures great variation. Some houses are single-storey buildings, while some have multiple floors. Some feature ultra-modern and expansive glass panes; others sport open balconies with lush plants and pots.

Throughout the different renders, one thing stays constant – the artist’s love for the city of Mumbai. Although all the houses float in the endless Mumbai sky, they are situated in different landscapes. Some houses overlook towering apartments while others float over vast seas. Some renders shine in bright daylight; others quietly levitate in the city’s solemn night skies. Posting these images on his Instagram account, the artist aptly named this series as “Mumbai Surreal Estate”

Imagination to The Rescue

If we consider it, floating houses are not that whimsical. They offer all the qualities of premium residences. High-Rise Building? Check. Surrounded By Nature? Check. Well-Ventilated? Of course. Great Views? Absolutely, you get to see the whole city with a bird’s eye view.

On a more serious note, these designs seem rooted in Mumbai’s crammed housing realities. Anarock’s research, published in the first quarter of this year, highlighted that Mumbai witnessed a whopping 55% addition in residential units this year as compared to last year. Recently, an Instagram user, Sumit Palve’s video, showcasing a packed but tiny apartment also went viral. The beds serving as mini kitchenettes and the dining area acting as a makeshift workstation brought out the jarring realities of Mumbai’s residential sector. And as they say, necessity is the mother of invention. It is only natural that one would wish to escape the rising claustrophobia of cramped dwellings and enter the vast sky’s openness.

Prateek Arora has repeatedly responded to Mumbai’s practical living concerns through his art. In June, the artist countered the city’s timeless waterlogging problem via his AI imagery series ‘Amphibious Autorickshaws’ and ‘Flowcal Trains’. The renders showcased uniquely designed vehicles that could facilitate public transportation through Mumbai’s flooded roads.

Baffled Responses

Netizens were left amazed at the imaginary designs. Many users expressed their admiration for the artist’s unbounded imagination. Some others added to the fun of the ongoing conversation with their witty responses. Check out some of the top comments and reactions on the post.
