The highway was designated as NH 48 in the year 2012 when the NHAI or National Highways Authority of India renumbered all the national highways in the country. Before that, the Delhi to Mumbai stretch on the highway was known as NH 8 and the Mumbai to Chennai stretch was designated as NH 4.
