Land Mapping Effort Aims to Identify Unutilised Parcels and Improve Land Acquisition Process
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is gearing up to launch a comprehensive initiative to identify unutilised land parcels both within and outside the right of way (RoW) along national highways. The nationwide mapping effort is expected to aid government agencies in compiling a consolidated record of land for government use.
Composition of a Dedicated Unit to Oversee Land Data Management
As part of this initiative, the ministry will establish a dedicated unit and assemble a team of land and GIS experts to assist regional offices across various states in gathering plot-wise information. Official sources revealed that the team will review available government documents and conduct on-the-ground visits to towns or villages to gather data.
Utilization of Existing Land Acquisition Portal and Future Upgrades
The ministry already operates a land acquisition portal, Bhoomi Rashi, which serves as a centralised platform for processing land notifications and streamlining the land acquisition process. Officials stated that the details gathered through the mapping process will be integrated into the portal to facilitate the identification of unutilised land parcels.
Objectives and Monitoring of the Initiative
The initiative aims to lay the foundation for future upgrades to the portal and improve the online platform used to compile digitised land records. The progress of the initiative will be monitored on a weekly basis, and workshops will be conducted for officials to explain the methodologies and processes involved in digitising revenue maps and collecting data.
